  • how much for thieve's head on a plate?

    #bountyhunterseasonstartsnow

    i'd call that a gift!

if the original buyer comes forward they won't be out of pocket or held responsible.. Some people just aren't aware of the trouble they cause by buying bargain bikes off brick lane.

I'm aware we're talking a million to one shot here, it's probably being stripped down as i write.

Expecting a lost cause i'll be selling my argos refurb bike very soon to fund the damage.. damn..

  • Ok folks!

What locks are definitely known to work?

Obviously we need remedial assistance in that department!

  • So if you do find the louse who nicked your bike, still in clear possession of your bike, what should you do?

  • I was going to point you to the "What to do if your bike is stolen" thread, but you've obviously found it.

  • My flat mate had his Miche Pista wheels stolen from his bike today on Hackney Road. An older (40's ish) Asian man was seen hanging around the bike before it disappeared.

Any sightings of a dodgy set for sale, please PM me.

    Cheers.

  • Near work, I see every day a real nice fixie skidder bike, good recent british frame builder, very good specs on wheels, etc... that is locked, at the same place since several month, with a middle range Kryptonite, using the Sheldon Brown method. Not saying where this is on a public forum. To me the owner is not around, gone traveling or whatever, as the bike is covered in dust and looks abandoned.
Recently I noticed the bike has been moved on the railing, lifted from the floor, maybe it's some kind of sign from someone who wants to steal it, to see if it is being moved back to the normal place? Don't know. Yesterday I tried to put it back on its two wheels on the floor in case it was the case, but failed as it was quite intricate in the railing and I did not want to look like I was myself stealing the bike. I left. Should I put a lock on it with a note with my phone number? A bit reluctant doing this it's near work and if the owner (or someone claiming to be) calls when I'm not around, they might be well upset... If the "bike moving" is the work of people with bad intentions, I don't think they would be professional thieves, otherwise I suppose it would be long gone already... Not sure what to do, can't report it as it's not stolen yet... Any thoughts?

  • If somebody leaves a bike overnight in my mind they are not good role models.

  • only good role models should be protected from crime.
    too much olympics perhaps?

  • ^^^Think you just leave it to the owner mate :/

  • tape a note to it: 'I am watching you'

    That's what I thought too...

  • My beloved Peugeot racer was stolen from Columbia Road E2 on Sunday - just outside the Globe.

Just had my wheels nicked outside the Royal Oak on Columbia Road. They were nothing special but if anyone sees a pair of white deep V's with Joytech hubs being flogged around brick lane they're probably mine. Feel free to choke him with them.

It was partly my own fault - Krypto D lock round frame/lampost, wheels exposed. I know, I know. Went out in a bad mood and forgot my chain.

  • FOUND ALAN CYCLOCROSS IN SHOREHAM

The bike was unlocked and left for several days. It looks like someone's taken some care over it, and probably wouldn't have just left it sitting there. Anyone know who it belongs to? It would be great to get it back to it's owner.

  • +1 Please lets be open about what happens to our bikes without fear of people being wankers about it.

Guys, sorry about the mistake. Please re-read my post, but with a :( on the end. The inflection was missing, and was probably more important than I had realised.

    :(

  • Ahh I see, sorry fella, it certainly read differently!
    +rep for the explanation
(well as soon as I spread rep anyway)

Did they have track nuts as well?? Or were they quick release?

I always feel safer with track nuts, but I guess they can be removed pretty quickly with a spanner as well

  • Unfortunately having multiple friends (and myself) experience wheel theft I don't think track nuts are any safer. It's just that not locking up quick release wheels is *completely * mental, as opposed to not locking up track wheels which simply tempts fate

  • Regular nuts, not QR.

Agreed... marginally safer in that the tea leaf can't remove tightened nuts with their bare hands, but a bike thief without a spanner is like an artist without a pencil.

People think I'm OTT for carrying around a Krypto D and an abus chain for a beater but this is why... (it's not the first time). I've forgotten the chain a few times recently and got away with it, so I thought I might be ok to go for a quick pint - alas.

there was a pretty nice bike (ie, nicer than mine) sitting 10 feet away when I left, wheels exposed. I hope that guy got away with it.

    Misread too, sorry mate.

  • My beloved Peugeot racer was stolen from Columbia Road E2 on Sunday - just outside the Globe. It was only left for an hour and the buggars cut straight through my armoured cable lock. Since the attached picture was taken I have replaced the tires. They are now black with white rims. I had a scan round Brick Lane and Hackney straight after it happened but so far it hasn't surfaced. My friend amazingly recovered her wheels when they were nicked thanks to the watchful eyes of people in this forum. Please help me track my bike down!

^^ downloaded image to my phone. ^ wheels should be easy to spot.
may be around brick lane ~10am tomorrow so i will keep an eye out.

  • just bought a Protector 11mm Chain, Squire SS50P5 Open Shackle Lock at 0.8m after my back wheel was stolen. £55 delivered next day.

if you have a mini-D then they combine perfectly to be worn around the waist (32") at an angle when riding.
if you are smaller then they could be worn down and across the shoulder. if you are bigger then the 1.0m option should tie around the waist without using the mini-D to extend the length.
4kg (chain, padlock and mini-D) feels heavy to hold, but as it hangs so well around the waist (32") feels a lot less when riding.

the chain and padlock were recommended in the 'locks that work' thread.

  • Someone left there bike(shitty yellow foffa) locked up against a railing in my place, residences management put a sign on there telling them to move it. They didn't. Just watched one of the maintenance guys come and cut the evo mini off with cordless dremmel. Watch out those using mini evo's!

  • Bars and stem nicked from outside the Haggerston last Friday night. Probably long gone but if you're offered white open prison bars and/or a gold snafu bmx stem they're hot property and the guy selling them to you is a thief.
