As someone that prefers CX tyres off-road, and that probably see little snow. No you dont need one.

But they look like toys. Which appeals to inner child.

Surly are bringing out some 4.7" mud tyres at some point. Now that gets me excited.

Hey, I saw snow once a few years ago. I didn't go outside the door though as I fear the unknown.
Probably right about the inner child and I know as soon as I rode one I would put it up for sale as it would be too sluggish, albeit rather comfortable.
