It would be lovely to think that one could stumble into a rural country pub and be greeted enthusiastically whilst having your bottles whisked from your grasp to be filled without request. Perhaps that might have been a regular occurrence in times of yore, when passers-by, particulary cyclists, were a rarity. Unfortunately I don't think we live there anymore, and the top of toys hill is probably not as rural as you think. I suspect a fair number of cyclists walk in there and expect a refill.
I have had refills for free but recently have taken to buying a packet of crisps or something before asking for a refill. It costs less than a quid. I like pubs and think it's a bit of a shame that quite a lot of them are disappearing, so I don't really mind spending a quid on a packet of crisps and a drink because I tend to fool myself that my small act has helped support its continued existence.
