  • Pretty sure my Steamroller has these fitted. They certainly do the job but are not a perfect fit on the dropouts although they are at least small and tidy.

Looking worryingly like a torture device.

  • My dear Alex, I would very much like to hear exactly what was the intention of this very product that's deemed torturous to you.

  • My dear Ed, I am sure you would (you cheeky sod) but not in a thousand years.

  • Oh I wouldn't call it torture if you enjoyed it.

  • Anyone running FSA Vero cranks? I have them on my current Bowery build and I would like to keep them on my Steamroller but also would like to get somewhat decent bottom bracket (currently it's a crappy Shimano UN54 with 110mm axel).

I was looking at Campagnolo Centaur or Record Pista but there's only 111mm option. Any clues how that 1mm would influence my chainline? I've looked at that massive list of drivetrain combos but all of the Vero cranks in there are listed with the same crappy Shimano BBs.

    Thanks

  • Nothing wrong with a UN54. I've been running one for 4 years with no problems. The Campy BBs are ISO, the FSA Vero is JIS.

  • un54's are fairly bombproof - whats your problem with it?

  • Mine is making a tone of random sound effects recently but maybe it's just a coincidence. If you guys are saying that it's solid I'll just get another one and carry on.

  • Does it still feel smooth when you spin it? If so, try taking it out, re-greasing the threads, and replacing. This often solves errant noises from the bb area problems.

  • Sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't. Aren't 54s completely sealed? If you are talking about outer bb threads those are properly greased.

  • Yes, I was talking about the threads of the frame.

  • Hi , fairly new to site , been lurking a while . I have ordered a steamroller frame , coming tomorrow . Can't wait to build it up , was going to strip my current single speed to start with . And gradually change bits . Got a few ideas of colour scheme , would welcome any advice or hints etc . Already have a cross check set up as a touring bike . Just want the steamroller as a quick , fun bike

  • ^ What colour did you go for?

  • OT but I'd like to see your crosscheck touring setup. Perhaps a post in here is required?

  • Gone for the meth green , so should be the cream one I think
Will put some pics of the cross check when I take some . Just had to send the dynamo front wheel back , as it's started making a noise , only had it a 6 weeks

  • Only thing that puts me off a steamroller is the bb seems low and the top tube seems pretty long in my size (53cm), i know its the road style geo', but it just seems like it would be a bit dull to ride, any opinions on that?

I guess i prefer the feel of tight and nippy track geometry, not that i ridden that many, but yeah...

  • Not finished building mine yet , last bits coming tomorrow so should be maiden rides over the weekend

  • Aches - you are welcome to try my 53cm 'Roller and check out the dullness factor

  • I'm not a Londoner, but i'm guessing you are?

basically, i'm just wondering how they compare to the handling of a track bike geo', to me the look like conversions until you see the drop outs.

  • TT length is a personal matter I would say. I've just finished building mine and with 26mm layback seatpost and 130mm stem it is still about 20-25mm short from perfect. I'm running 62cm frame and I'm 6'4" by the way.

  • Can't really think of any other similar suitable frames with a shorter top tube, so it may have to do

Since when road geo is regarded as dull to ride?

On-one Pompino? Tokyo Fixed? All City? to name but a few.

Surly stand out alone as it got the longest top tube in relation to the headtube length, I'd loved to own one but the top tube is far too long for my size, even a 52cm is just about right and I fit 57cm ST (normally 54cm square to fit right).

The other reason why Surly have a low BB is because of it's tyres clearance - 38c, otherwise you won't be able to reach the ground while seated.

  • I just prefer a short wheel base and short top tube, just feels a lot more natural to ride like that, long top tubes always feel like a pointless compromise of handling.

I actually just got a Pompino, but it's not for what i would use the Steamroller for, thought about the other 2 frames as well, bot not sold on either

I do plan to ride with risers so the hole comfortable reach thing can be achieved,

The wheelbase have minor impact on how the bike handle, as long it's not as a touring bike, it'll be fine.

Reckon you got some test riding to do before you figure it out.
