A helmet doesn't make anyone "safer", although it may reduce the risk of head injury in a fall or collision.

It won't reduce the risk of injury where a double decker bus rolls over someones pelvis.

Don't laugh, this happened to me when on of the bolts in my SPD cleat fell out. As much as I turned my foot, it wouldn't detach from the pedal! I had to ask a random passerby for some help...
