• No evidence whatsoever pointed toward this.

The only evidence needed is common sense - I would add I don't often wear a helmet, but I know I probably should.

The bigger problem is that if you are in a serious accident a helmet isn't going to do much as you are so exposed as a cyclist anyway, and if you are hit by a lorry nothing is going to help. I also think a lot of road bike helmets are deigned to meet the minimum standard, and that a bmx/skate style helmet is probably a better bet round town

  • The only evidence needed is common sense.

It would be common sense to wear a helmet all the time, as it's the best way of making sure I won't crack my skull if I slip down the staircase.

It also would be common sense to wear them while says, working in a pub as you could easily slip on spilled beer and crack your neck.

  • Having cycled round London for years, virtually spill free, I only started wearing a Helmet about 2 weeks ago...

Last night around midnight, I came off at about 10 mph turning onto the A5 from St John's Wood Road... Must have been some diesel or something on the road, as my front wheel slid faster than Cav on Speed!

Bit battered and bruised, lots of road rash and a loose tooth, but bloody glad I had my Helmet on...

Got patched up by a charming Doctor in A & E at St Mary's Paddington, called Lu Lu, who got very excited about the L'Eroica and bikes in general...

Not sure I like my new look.. its a bit like Leslie Ash after a fun eve with Lee Chapman !

Oh it's the same ol' stories that every couple shared in their life, they always have helmets, decided not to, fell over, laughed about it, put on their helmet back again before dying gracefully at an old age.

  • It was a fairly well balanced discussion with probably about as much depth as could be hoped for given the short time. My only wish is that the anti-compulsion man could have made more of the point that this is all a distraction from issues that are more important.

  • Let concentrate on the non-existing ban of using the phone while driving.

I know of people caught a few times. But not Londoners, know none that have been caught.

  • Does the wieght of the helmet affect neck muscles and the ability to hold you head off the floor.

  • The comments on the BBC report on this make me very sad and disappointed with humanity.

    I shouldn't read them really.

So what you're saying is that you started wearing a helmet, and then mysteriously, for no good reason, two weeks later you had a crash? Sounds well dodgy. I've only ever had one crash (touch wood) and that was when I got doored by pax getting out of a cab into the road without looking. I was wearing a helmet at the time. Having heard your story, my suspicions are definitely aroused.

Can we definitely rule out conspiracy? What if the helmet manufacturers put tiny brain-manipulating electrodes in helmets that make wearers crash more often so they'll tell everybody about how their helmet saved their life and keep buying more and more of them?

  • I know of people caught a few times. But not Londoners, know none that have been caught.

    Like I said, non-existing.

Everyone get away with it, only the very rare fews get caught.

  • I just watched the actual interview on the Guardian. Like most I wished he hadn't said it and the press have predictably jumped on the bits they wanted to but to be fair to him he was clearly on the way to being a bit worse for wear and said something like "I'm too tipsy and shouldn't probably comment" or something like that..

Lynx you're arbitrarily applying an arbitrarily defined label, you don't work for Auntie do you ?

Or my mates are quite law abiding. Am amazed at the brazeness of some, or the inability of idiots to drive. Is a handsfree kit really expensive?

Want to go fly a kite? With appropriate safety equipment, and checked health and safety statement.

Oh I am on your side sunshine

  • Would it not be better to make a turning alarm compulsory on buses similar to HGV?

  • Would it not be better to make a turning alarm compulsory on buses similar to HGV?

But that would make it seem as though the vulnerable should be protected from the dangerous, instead of the vulnerable only having themselves to blame for being vulnerable in the first place when they get hurt by the dangerous. It'll never catch on.

  • Want to go fly a kite? With appropriate safety equipment, and checked health and safety statement.

Just made me think, I wear a helmet for cycling, but (as below) not for flying a kite...?

  • That'll be because of the blue safety tarmac.
