I seem to remember back in the 70s there were lots of chains to choose from but all the same size. When I changed up to 6 speed I used the same chain. Ie. any chain should do (not 1/8th)

aren't the 8 - 9 speed ones too narrow?

Anything marked 5-8 inclusive.

^ This.
But if you don't need a powerlink, I'd maybe try and get a Shimano 7-speed as they are slightly wider than most 8-speed-and-less-compatible chains.

5-6 are the same
7-8 are the same
9 is foreveraloneThough generally 5-8spd are now grouped together, though teh difference is so small that is not a massive issue.
I used connex wipperman stainless 6spd (608?) they cost about £22, which is sort of middle ground for a road chain, so far its got a years moderate use on it and doesn't show a fraction of wear on the wear-o-meter -

Z51 are fine and only £6 from ebay
If you wanted something matching tradition wise then a Sedis will do the job, there's some on ebay US for about £11.25 posted to the UK http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230812288962?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D230812288962%26_rdc%3D1
