Deep rims splitting at the join?

Posted on
  • Ok, so basically as the title says... I recently had one rim split all the way through the join, it's only held together by the braking surface, and another than looks like it is about to... any experience with this? Is it fixable? Looks like close to £100 is going to have been wasted if this second one goes too!

  • Sounds painful, a split rim.

  • Especially for my wallet ;)

  • My rear is like this. I only noticed it when I was respraying the wheel, the rim is only welded at the braking surface and there is a visible gap in the rest of the join.I've had no problems, been riding with this rear about 6 months, bought second hand so no idea of total milage/usage.

  • more background info please ?
did you buy rims new 2nd hand ?
    what rims are they ?
are they new old ? age ?

if you've been riding them 10 years using brakes to stop then wear will make the side wall thin and eventually wear away

  • Both second hand; not logos on them so i'm not sure, I could take some pics? The one that looks like it is about to go was a varno build so not that old.

Ptr, are you still using it?? I took mine apart the moment I spotted it, was not confident at all!

  • Take some photos.

It would probably be best to replace them.

  • even if they have been rebuilt the rims are very likely to be worn if they have been ridden for a while
there was an excellent photo on here yesterday showing what wear looks like
once the rims have been worn the sidewalls start to this and hollow and eventually they will dent / bend / blow your tyre off the rim

  • as you can see the concave nature is a result of the brake pads wearing the rim
as the metal thins it will obviously become weaker and splitting will become more likely

the joins will also wear in a similar way

  • Take some better photos.
ftfy can't see shit in that pic, that just looks like the makers joint was not done well enough.

  • I guess that must be it then, that pic shows it all really... the join went the whole way on both sides. I was just wondering if it were common when I started the thread

  • Alloy rims start off as an extrusion strip which is bent and joined with an inevitable seam.

  • perfectly normal. the spokes hold the whole thing together. most rims look like this under the flashy stickers.

  • yeah, my issue is that the seam has broken apart... are you saying that is normal too? sorry if i'm being dense

  • Looks like a sleeved joined rim. I don't think your picture shows anything too unusual, my old dp18s looked similar. Probably looks worse because they're white

  • When you put a tyre on and pump it up, imagine what all the pressure does to the join. Then stop worrying!

    This.

Wardy, yes I'm still using it.
