  • Ah, just saw it on TT forum. It's not the same as UK sportives. It had a $100k prize pool!

  • He raced too but it was the Grand Fondo where he got tested.

  • That's dumb. They specifically advertise it as being a tested event and he rides? Knob-end.

  • ..and taking EPO to win a $8k bike? Just buy the fucking bike!

  • I see the Chinese swimmer's incredible finish to her 400m IM has raised a few eyebrows
Can anyone point me in the direction of an explanation of what doping is, how it works and how the cheats manage to avoid getting caught. Something succinct and understandable that I can read at lunchtime

    Cheers

  • I'm sure there's a doping thread on here somewhere... hmm...

  • What do you mean? Different drugs do different things - increase ability to move oxygen about, increase alertness, increase muscle mass, reduce body fat, facilitate faster recovery, blood doping increases red blood cells which mean you can shift more oxygen again, etc. Then they mask that shit with other drugs and or dodge the piss test by using someone else's wee.

  • Haha!

But British Olympics chief Lord Moynihan said she was "clean" and "deserves recognition for her talent".
Oh that's ok then. Carry on.

  • I'm starting to understand why Wiggo got a swimming coach.

Thanks the first article is the kind of thing I was looking for

  • I love that fact that because she beat the mens times, she must be dopping !
It's gonna happen at some point. She's young, flexible, light and fast, she causes less drag than any of the men. See how she does in another 8 years.

  • The problem is that it can take years for a new drug to be identified, then years on how to test for it, and then all the politics on whether they should test for it. An athlete can have an entire career on a drug before the doping agencies catch up.

  • She's young, flexible, light and fast, she causes less drag than any of the men. See how she does in another 8 years.

Not very scientific that, is it?

Given the differences between male and female physiology there is some cause for surprise when a 16 year old woman beats a 27 year old man's time in a section of a directly comparable event. Especially when the 27 year old man is the world's best swimmer right now.

  • She's young, flexible, light and fast
So are all of the other 16 year old girls, but they're not schooling the top ranked male swimmer in the world in how to swim a freestyle leg.

  • If you knew what they both displaced you could estimate the drag they were both having to overcome (body shapes being roughly equal).

That way you could then see what power output was required for her to beat Phelps.

  • Lochte.

    Phelps is sloooooow.

  • Too old and inflexible, prolly

  • And fat.

  • Samples are kept for 8 years after the Olympics.

That doesn't make up for anyone who 'wins' gold 5 years down the track though.

  • Phelps doping:

  • lol that should be anti-doping.
Surely smoking reduces the amount of oxygen supplied to the muscles. He should be given a head start to compensate :)

  • The Science of Sport blog breaks down why that particular swim raises eyebrows particularly the pacing of it .

Basically at the end of a medley all other male and female athletes are about 20% (18%-23%) slower than the fastest times posted by in a solo 100m race.

She was only about 10% slower. Which means she wasn't even trying her hardest because if you are at your limits you should be fatiguing and slowing down so she could have gone alot faster.

I watched her qualify first yesterday in 200m medley and she was breathing through her nose as soon as she surfaced from touching the timing pad. Not even out of breath doing an OR.
