  • If you're in Fulham, Hair Perfect. Ask, and wait for, George.

Johns Barber Shop on Barnsbury Rd. £8 for a grade one all over, finished with a straight razor and singeing of any excess ear hair. Uncomfortable borderline racist banter with the staff an added extra. Proper old school.

  • Jeff's barbers on Great Suffolk Street in Borough is top - a bit over a tenner, but they do burn off your ear hairs at the end of the cut

  • Mr Toppers should be banished. Went to the Tottenham Court Road branch one summer's lunchtime a few years ago. They literally spent 2 minutes on my hair. There were no other punters in the shop. It looked like shit. I'm sure you get the jist.

There is a cheap barbers in South Woodford, called Hair Male. They do cut's around the £10-12 mark I believe.

  • It is my life's work to find the best haircut in London for £20 or less (tip, should it be earned, included). My biggest gripe is consistency: a number of times I've had a really good first cut and gone back for seconds only to be badly disappointed. I've had brilliant and completely shit haircuts costing everything from £8 to £50 (I used to be a right ponce). Now I just want a decent gentleman's haircut, the same every time, for a score or less.

  • This completely defeats the purpose of you getting a haircut for £20 or less, however I would recommend Genco in City Point near Liverpool Street. The guy Paul who runs it is an absolute G when it comes to men's hair, always consistent, gin & tonic or a beer in the fridge for when you get there, loads of banter, he also understands when a man (like myself) has no interest in football. Defo worth a try if you're willing to let go of 38 golden coins.

  • £38 for a gent's haircut!? Jesus.

I go (went) to the Cutting Bar on White Lion Street in Islington. Went up to £9, but they've never let me down. Most of them are Eastern European too so they don't bother with the chit-chat. And one of them kept running her fingers through my hair and told me it was nice.

    Highly recommended.

  • "You lucky, lucky lady".

  • Alfred's in coldharbour road, camberwell

Costing £8/9 and a really decent but don't be put off by the look of the shop from the outside and alfred's single tooth..

  • Near Victoria, £10

Been going for last 3 years - nothing too special but consistently good.

  • Try Deniz just by New Cross Station, cheap and he does Triathlon so you get all the training banter...

  • +1 on Deniz.

Have been going to him for years. For training tips more than haircutting but he's a decent chap.

  • Been to the World Champs IIRC and can still run a marathon in way less than three hours at the end of an ironman despite no longer being a spring chicken.

  • Is that the same guy with loads of Strava segments in London?

  • +1 for Jeff's barber on Great Suffolk street, top service for £16, 'the flame' was a highlight aswell

  • The search for a long term barber continues. Thought I had a contender but I'm calling it quits with Valentinos on Cornwall Rd, Waterloo.

I should preface all of this by pointing out that I'm just about hanging on to it being worth my getting a haircut at all by the skin of my teeth. I'm receding from the temples at an alarming rate and the resulting widow's peak is rapidly starting to play catch up. I'm not far off requiring the "Millenium Combover" (#1 all over). As a result I’m very particular about barbers. The line between decent cut and the balding squaddie pinhead look is very fine indeed.

I've been going to Valentinos for a couple of years now and the old guy there does a great cut. One of his sons is okay too if you're very careful about what you tell him. But the other son, the scary one with the chunky silver jewellery and hairy palms always ends up making me look like a baldy squaddie pinhead no matter what I tell him. It's really not the sort of situation in which I feel comfortable saying, "Sorry mate, I'll wait for your dad". Which I know is weak and pathetic of me but I just can't be arsed with the stress of telling him after all this time or of sitting there playing the odds, trying to time it so I'll get his old man.

I tried the latter last week and failed miserably (despite taking a fake phone call at one crucial point). Son number two welcomed me up chatting away about my recent wedding (for which his dad cut my hair) and his new baby like we're old friends. Once again I gave very specific instructions in the hope I could steer him towards a half decent cut which, as usual, he ignored from the first stroke of the clippers (way too far up the side of the head) and left me looking like a squaddie pinhead. Again. Ffffuuuuu...

Shame because they're lovely guys, it's a cool shop, convenient for work and the attention to detail with the cut-throat etc is always great. Plus it's bargain at £12. But I just can't cope with the stress and humiliation of walking out with goofy looking haircut one time in three.

Guess I’ll try Great Suffolk Street then.

    Mild Bitching Thread >>>>>

  • Gro Hair in Clapham is pretty good for bang on £20. Looks a bit hip from the outside but they're friendly & consistent.

  • Chris & George on Bethnal Green Road.
    £7.50
If you can tolerate the scarface artwork and cheesy euro-dance on a speaker a foot from your face, it's great.

  • Elton's barbers on Vanbrugh Hill, SE10 is only £11 and they're great funny guys. Takes full on consideration on how you want your hair. Been going there for 4 years now and can't find another place better than theirs.
