If you're still looking in 4-6 weeks, let me know and I'll sell you my Raleigh Flyer for 130. I'm working on a build and as soon as that's done, I can let the old one go.

Sorry to hijack a thread ( and resurrect an old one!) but I haven't served me 24 hours yet!
I really want to own a single speed and think the cheapest way (I am on a strict budget) is to pick up an old road bike and convert that.
Apart from eBay and here is there anywhere else I can look? I see you guys think that gumtree is a bit iffy, but I'm really hoping to pick one up for around £40 (complete) and I don't mind if it needs some tlc.

£40 (complete)
Keep an eye on the classifieds on here and you might find a bike for that money at some point.

Ha ha! Thought it may raise a few eyebrows!
I really don't mind a heavy 70s/80s bike - when I searched the forums I read some guy picked up a complete Puch for £40.
Part of the reason for doing this is so I can work on the bike myself, that's half the fun!

i picked up a couple of old carbolite peugouts from ebay @ £20 a pop
nothing flash but rideable
brake cables outers and the crappy tyres justified the £20 spent the rest was pure profit !!
used them as commuters / beaters / polo bikes -

I'm 6' 3" if that helps

I'll keep looking on eBay. I'm pretty tall so it doesn't help that there aren't many my size there.
Cheers

Given this is London, the majority of bicycle around that price point will likely to be stolen.
car boot sales is a good place to find cheap bike.

so whats the going rate of a converted road bike to single speed in that there London?
Something like an 80s Raleigh or Pug, redished rear wheel on a single speed freewheel, etc. I keep hearing theyre £300 range, is that true?

Not really. Depending on the place you buy it, condition and parts you could pay £100-£200 for something broadly of that description. At a guess.
If you want a cheap Raleigh frame big enough for a 6'3" person you can have mine for £40 and a selection of appropriate parts for a small amount more. PM me.

• #13
Sorry, just realised you're not the same person who's 6'3". IGNORE ME.

The auctioneers in Leyton who sell off the stolen bikes recovered by police and never claimed- Frank G Bowen? The deal used to be turn up every other Thursday (they publish the catalogue on their website in advance) and you can pick up 3 shit MTBs for £10 and the occasional nicer frame or bike for a bit more- they always need some TLC. Haven't been for over 2 years though so things might have changed.
-
• #23
i've been to those autions a few times
you can get some bargins there fore sure
like katie haven't been for a few years though
i wouldn't have thought it had changed too muchviewing day ( day prior to auction ) is good to go along and poke around amongst the hundred or so bikes that are usually there
check spec's and gruppo's
