The legs moving around could cause a lot of turbulence/drag. But that with a fairing on the front seems the same as obree's version to me "aero" wise, just more comfortable.
Maybe the weird lever pedalling is actually very efficient?
just revisit the idea behind this is having an aerodynamic edge over his opponents by making his fairing sleeker. the legs moving is only a problem because it would make a big bulge in the fairing on the back of the bike necessary - just so happens the trailing edge is the most important - so i can see why he thinks this compact design is a better idea. on the detailed photo we can see how clean his work is, but even so that funny drivetrain will be less efficient than a regular one.
There are going to be mechanical losses, and you are going to keep either 90% or 95% of your energy, but that difference isn’t that much. The difference is whether your bike will have a drag factor of 0.12 or 0.1
