Best practice is to put an old seat post in and clamp that.
The frame is designed to accept considerable force being applied to it through the seatpost (vide: fat cyclists), it's not designed to accept considerable force being applied to a fairly small area to the top tube (clamped top tube whilst trying to remove a stubborn bottom bracket with a big wrench).
You can also overtighten the clamp, and crack the top tube, whereas overtightening the clamp and FUBAR'ing an old seatpost is less of a disaster.
