  • Oh hai!

I'm new to basically everything - started cycling a year or two ago for the ol' commute, riding an armchair of a bike with too many gears and a frame made primarily of suspension. It was an expensive hassle to look after and pretty much falling apart when I was mugged and bikejacked on the canal. So they kinda did me a favour taking it off my hands.

For the last couple of weeks I've started obssesively trawling these forums and I'm now looking to get my first singlespeed, probably an off-the-peg, as everyone selling used seems to be 8 feet tall and I have no idea how to put something together myself yet. I'd love to find out more about learning to build and do maintenance and generally try and get less clueless about all this stuff.

    Yes.

Oh, I'm in East London btw. Pleasure to meet you al!

  • Who's this Al you're talking to?

    Welcome.

  • Slick work, fingers. Slick work.

Took me a good minute to spot that. Now I have 'You can Call me Al' in my head.

    Cheers for the welcome!

  • Hello all, newbie here!

Like stabbington, my previous bike was made of lead and 'suspension' and I was fed up of it, I'm moving to West London in September for studies, so thought a single speed would be a good for exercise and do eventually want to build my own!

  • Hi there one and all.

New here, from London. Come to explore the possibility of single speed bikes.

Not sure if they are for me just yet.

I currently have an old Trek 830 mountain bike and a Giant Tricross bike.

  • Hi one and all,

I am new here, from London.
Exploring whether a single speed bike might be for me.

As background, I currently own an old Trek 830 mountain bike and a Giant Cyclocross bike

  • Seymour here from Oxford. I'm a mate of TooTallTim from back in school if any of you guys know him.

I've built a couple of bikes up from shoddy parts for myself and most recently i have been turning those two said bikes into one relatively alright bike for my girlfriend to use to get to and from work. I killed a puppy as i beleive it's called along my journey of fixie enlightenment and have learnt from my mistakes by being educated on my first long distance ride from London to Oxford last weekend.

So now it's time to start on the bike i should have built three years ago. Already got my hands on a set of Miche Hubs with Mavic Rims as a wheelset, Used but cleanable, and looking forward to waiting patiently to find everything else i need.

In the meantime check this beauty i found while looking for pictures of Porteur handlebars. http://woodandfaulk.com/make/french-porteur-handlebar

  • Hello everybody!

Moving to London next month and first thing on my to-do list is buying a bike. Maybe fixie, or ss.

I'm also interested in social aspects of this community and would appreciate some local knowledge during my bike-hunt.

Until then, I'm doing some serious map study of my future 'hoods.

  • Hi from Montreal, Canada.

Actually I'm french and I'm livin' in montreal, looking for cool fixed gear forum.

  • Hi all.

Been riding a hybrid daily for the last couple of years and have signed up to the forum to find out some more about fixed gear bikes. Something a little lighter and simpler might be on the horizon - it'll certainly be a bitsa.

    From London, live in Walworth.

  • Hi!

I ride a Fuji track and read the 'intelligent well thought out advice' on here sometimes. Thought it might be a good idea to sign up.

    Seb.

  • Hey!

This is my first post on the site! Ive been checking out the forum for a few days now. Everything and everyone seems really helpful. I will soon be purchasing my first race/road bike. Hopefully keep you updated. Cheers from London

  • Hello:). I thought I should introduce myself.

I do ride fixed, although not often at the moment as it is 61 years old this year and not so waterproof! I mostly commute solo on a Circe Helios tandem so am a bit distinctive. I commute from Carshalton to Brixton. During the day I ride the tandem, sometimes with a stoker (either 4 or 7), usually with a 2 year old in a babyseat. At the weekends I mostly ride a Van Nic, often with camping stuff on board.

I am married to clarion who some of you will know. He is verbose on the forums and quiet in real life. I am the opposite.

Nice to hear from you. I'll keep an eye out for the distinctive solo tandem and an ear out for the verbosity.

  • Say hello! I'm distinctively slow on the tandem ;D. (I'm slow on everything else as well, but even slower on the tandem!)

  • Hi everyone. I recently had my bike stolen my some cutter unt. So I'm in the market for a new one and heard this is the place. Something SS, fairly light, biggish, with drops and most importantly legit.
    Thanks!

    Zak

  • Hi all,
I'm sam from Australia. Just got to London UK
Have never been overseas so this is all very exciting!!
Ive had many a fancy fixed gear back in Melbourne, but sold off all my cycling wares before moving here.
So I'm back to starting from scratch!
I'm joining up to try and connect with riders, the London fixed, track and road rides, hopefully I can find a bike which works ASAP so I can get riding, find a velodrome, find some road races and time trials, and get riding!!
Hopefully start a bike project, such as a sponsored epic ride with filming along the way etc.
Oh and I'm an artist, my works up at www.samuelcondon.com
    Cheers

Haha cheers chainbreaker, if it's less egomania than the Australian fixed forums fixed.org.au I recon it'll be a walk in the park ;)
