My sockets (they're pretty regular) fit that configuration. Try a thinner walled socket - more likely to find that than a peanut butter thing.

I don't have any thin walled sockets. I tried my LBS but they had nothing either. I read on another forum about filing down/shaping an existing socket but seems like a lot of extra work.

Get a vernier caliper to measure it (failing that a ruler), and you're correct in that you need a peanut butter wrench to remove the bolt, it's most likely 15mm though.
I've got the campag wrench (£15 when I bought it) which is nice, but I think quite overpriced for what it is, I wouldn't recommend it, something like this should do:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Elite-15mm-cotterless-crank-wrench-steel-/290738940994?_trksid=p2045573.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D27%26meid%3D695511973851754121%26pid%3D100033%26prg%3D1011%26rk%3D1%26#ht_500wt_1180Otherwise Tacx do one with a rubber handle for about £15 as well, looks more sturdy than the campag one, however I can't fault it as so far I've put quite a lot of force on it and it hasn't warped at all.

Or spend an extra £1.50 from the same seller and get a 14, 15 and 16mm one! (like I just have!)

socket sets don't fit in the gap i've found
you probably need one of these with thinner walls on the socket

Just measured with a steel rule and it's definitely 15mm.
I like the Campag and agree that they're are overpriced. Saw one sell for £30 (inc. postage) on ebay yesterday.
Thanks for the help. Now I only have to decide which one I want! -

Thank you Hazzus, I didn't see that, turns out I'm in need of a 14mm now so I've just bought one!

ive had this with one of my bikes. the bolt head was too big for the hole in the crank, no off the shelf tool would touch it.
ended up using a box wrench and grinding down the edges.
Sorted.
