Renting in London with pets

Posted on
  • I currently live in a flat in Edinburgh that is owned by a family member. Moving down to London in about 2 months time and have no idea how to go about renting with a dog in tow.

Can I be honest with real estate agents? It seems every time I mention I have a dog they simply say 'no'. Even if I offer to put down a fat deposit and clean the carpet/paint the walls before moving.

Anyone have any experience feel like sharing some tips?

  • Agencies have a load of dogs on their books gone walkies with rent in arrears. As long as you trust him, offer to sign a joint and several tenancy agreement. They shouldn't have any bones about that.

  • Depends on the areas, if there's a lot of green spaces in and around a particular borough you'll end up having a lot more success.

I've lived with dogs in Greenwich, Balham and Clapham over the last 4 years with no problems. It's often a good idea to say you'll up the deposit, as you've suggested, and to stress that your animal is house trained etc etc

  • i was asked to bring my dog to a few interviews. which can work in your favour if the dog is calm and well trained. it may also be in your benefit to get your past landlord to give you a written reference pertaining to the dog's behaviour

  • Maybe not quite relevent- but, when we rented our last place one of the things that I liked about it was the cat scratching station in the photographs that the estate agent showed us.

When it came to signing things we mentioned that we had a cat but the landlord was clearly ok with that, which he was.

Somewhat annoyingly James (the cat) then scratched a door up, which I had to sand/fill/sand back, but I left it in the condition in which we found it- and got the full deposit back.

  • Thanks everyone for your input! I found a great place in E1 just off the north side of Commercial St near Brick Ln. Does anyone know the area well? Don't really know the first thing about London so would love to hear if anyone has any good (or bad) things to say about the area.

Seems nice enough, close to Wapping and the city, really close to 2 tube stations. A bit further away from any parks than I'd like but I don't think the dog would mind :P

  • Good choice Brick lane's great- too many curry places to choose from and brick lane bikes. a decent curry is far more important locally than greenspaces- even if you're a dog.

Trufax. Dog loves a good curry. Doesn't seem to enjoy the results as much though.
