The chain thing often gets broken. I bought a new one for about a fiver a couple of years ago. Think I got it off ebay:

Cheers, mine has snapped inside of the axle so i proving difficult to remove. Just need to get hold of some really thin needle nose pliers i think...

You might be able to unscrew it by just poking in a small flat-head screwdriver and twisting.

^ worked for me :-) measure the thing tho, not all linkages are the same. tip of thread to the first link in the chain i believe.

Thats a newer version, thanks for the link though found this which is mine.

Tried that, plus some pliers, plus gluing something to get a hold on plus bashing with screwdriver plus drilling and trying to use a screw extractor. Eventually i manned up and dismantled the entire thing and removed it. Will give everything a good clean and grease/oil up. Any recommendations?

I think the reason it broke was perhaps someone had used the wrong one so I've looked at the manual and ordered what I think is the right one. Hopefully it will come sharpish and i can put stuff back together.
Then I hope the shifter works as a new one is as much as the bike. One the bottom right

I've got a 4 speed and I'm pretty sure they use the same indicator rods (the chain thingy), I'm fairly certain you can't use the 3 speed chains (I wish you could cause I snapped mine today). http://www.oldbiketrader.co.uk/ has spares but at £40 for the whole assembly, it's eyewateringly expensive, so try this guy:

Then this manual from here may be more use.
Indicator chains are fairly weak and vulnerable.
If you can't get the parts or your shifter is busted, your cheapest option would be to convert the hub to 3-speed. With only the right-hand cable and your current shifter you should have access to gears 1,3,5 (although the actual shifts would occur between 2, 3, 4). A standard 3-speed shifter would also work, and if you're feeling fancy you could leave out the smaller sun gear and a few other bits of the axle assembly (my dad did this with his S5/1).
Just got one of these on a bike, I've never seen one like it before. There are two sets of cables going to either side of the hub and running into one single massive plastic shifter.
Upon looking on the hub the little chain thing is broken where it goes into the nut on the non-drive-side. Does anybody know if this is a replaceable parts and if its difficult to fix.
Any help on this is much appreciated I haven't the foggiest.
