If you're just changing the stem on the same bike then you're impacting more than one variable. On top of the tiller, you're also changing your posture and weight distribution. Being comfy could mean many things, but if you tried a shorter bike with a longer stem, your riding position would be the same.
+1 Dan ... fit is everything.
When people are arguing over the difference in stem length on here I think what they're REALLY talking about IS fit.
Take the differences in setup between Ryan's bikes and Luca. Both bikes are designed with minimum front-centre so the front wheels will be roughly the same distance from the BB on each bike.
Luca runs zero offset forks whereas Ryan's builds all have offset. All else being the same this means that Lucas bike would have to have a toptube longer than Ryan's by the difference in the amount of fork offset.
Smaller person with a long toptube will more likely need a tiny stem to get the correct fit whereas a taller person with a shorter toptube will need a longer stem. This is what we see on Ryan and Lucas bikes.Theory says that stem-length does affect handling. Ryan's bikes all have longer stems by design, not accident. The stem/tiller has a self centreing effect on your steering and helps especially at speeds below where your bike would naturally self-right itself. This doesn't necessarily mean longer stems are better for everyone, there are other ways to correct low speed instability.

I used to run a layback and short saddle.
I've now moved my whole position forward with an inline post and long stem.
Saddle to bars position remained the same but handling of the bike was very different. It wasn't about adding a long stem to correct the fit but rather where I wanted to be positioned on the bike to suit how I wanted to play.
Luca likes light steering with little weight on the front wheel so he can do really cool spinny turns.
Ryan can do the same still because he's still sat over the back of his bike.
For me, I wanted to add weight to the front and play more over the wheel.
So I guess once you've found the right fit, you can decide where you want to then position yourself. -

it really depends on whether you are more 'hot dog' or 'hamburger'.

What if you're a hotdog in a burger bun though?

Sounds kinky.

Low-grade sausage inna bun.

thats a double demi dog. its almost impossible to eat a dog inside a hamburger bun without snapping it and eating two halves. Unless you really get with the cheese.

The saga of the Mister X continues. My seatstays are cracking quite seriously at the seattube cluster.

Is it both sides stays or just non driveside?
If you want to try longer stems, see if your saddle will come forwards by the same amount.
