6mm is quite a lot in seatpost terms - Even using a 27.0 in 27.2 will fuck up the shape of your tube.
That said I painted a post with a couple of coats of hammerite and then had to painstakingly remove it as it wouldn't fit.
Also if the frame is fairly thick gauge cheap tubing then it doesnt really matter too much if you mishape the seat tube.
Net net, I'd still shim properly and just paint the exposed section.
