  • Realistically: Streatham to Stockley Park?
    Every day?

  • I was doing 26 mile round trip fixed but have recently lapsed.

I am with Cornelius when he says that at the end of the day an hour can sometimes feel a bit much... but when I do it I feel pretty good when i actually get to the front door..

  • mines been increased to 14 each way... at the end of the week into another headwind, a spinnier gear sounds like heaven

  • Willesden Green (NW) to Stratford? I'm debating trying it, I have a job in the Olympics and I really would rather not spend £100 for a monthly travelcard, and I'd also rather not be stuck underground packed like a sardine. It's around 12 miles, it seems doable but I need a bike! I've only got a Charge Scissor at the moment which is not set up, nor will ever be set up to commute on...

  • So, first post and appearance for me on LFGSS in sometime...good to be back and see all seems familiar.

I have a change in job that means that my usual 8 mile each way (SE to W London) is now changing from having to go Peckham to Slough most days.

Loathed to get a Brompton and do the Paddington to Hell express, I'm wondering, could I ride it?

It's 25.1 miles each way according to gmaps, going A4020 to avoid the A4 which i imagine would be shit during commute times?

I did a 20 mile each way commute for a couple of weeks, mostly straight down the A3, fixed all the way. Loved it. Puncture on a rainy day would make it less fun, but nothing's perfect. Can't advise about your particular route, though.

  • 25 miles each way is fairly hefty, but do-able fixed as the best route to Slough follows the Thames so is pancake flat.

From Richmond, head down to Kingston, over Kingston bridge, turn left, ride past Hampton Court grounds, turn right at the roundabout by Hampton Court then follow this road all the way to Chertsey. There are a few minor roads from Chertsey through to Staines that you can follow, then head over Runnymede and into Windsor. From Windsor to Slough is pretty straightforward I think, but depends where in Slough you are goin.

I come up through Chertsey to Richmond - but rarely go this way as it adds a mile or too. You can go either side of the river to Chertsey from Hampton Court, but I'd stay on the North side. Richmond, Twickenham, Fulwell, Hamton Wick/ Hill, Shepperton, Lower Sunbury, Chertsey Bridge.

You can just go straight up the A316 from Richmond but you'll really want to get off before the elevated section (doesn't stop the local clubs I always felt a bit vulnerable) even if it means following the cycle paths from Apex corner to the diary at Feltham and then cut through to the Sunbury Cross area/ Staines road, or just roads from Apex corner to Staines.

  • Currently doing about 18miles each way. Petts Wood to Camden Town.
It's lovely. So much better than the same journey by public transport and about the same time inc. change of clothes.
[no shower at the office is a bit grim :s]

  • 25 miles each way fixed is emminently doable, it's not as of you have any big hills out that way.

If you do work late and get tired you can always throw the bike on a train, unless of course your definition of working late is 5.45.

  • anyone doing more than 10 miles each way ..

  • I do about 15 miles a day (42/16) west to east London and back, but I don't think I'd do more than 25 miles a day single speed.
I'm becoming quite interested in longer-distance leisure riding so I'm looking at geared road bikes for that (I'd like to do the Dunwich Dynamo one day but I don't know if I'll try it single speed, we'll see), I don't know what I'd do if I had a longer commute, probably have a bike-choosing crisis every morning.

  • I rode from E5 to Southend on Monday, SS 48/17. I found it particularly breezy as a ride. That'll soon be shifted to 48/16 as it's a little too spinny for me.

If you indulge in skidding, this gear change will increase your tyre expenditure by eight and a half times. Beware.

    (48x17 = 17 skid spots, 48x16 = 1)

  • Warning well heeded, rare skid indulgence though. And I ride SS not FX - or would that be your point?

  • anyone doing more than 10 miles each way ..

Once you have done it and you stop you miss it. I used to do 15 and now my 7 through central london feels like shit. Stupid traffic jams.
