  • The ‘Tyburn Tree’ then – a triangular wooden frame 5m tall 3m across, erected in 1571 to hang up to 24 at once. Hangings had already taken place from elm trees on the same site from 1196 and continued to take place there every Monday until 1783. Felons were taken on a boozy procession by cart from Newgate Prison near St Pauls and the executions were eagerly attended by thousands of paying spectators. Nice.
