That may be because idiots think they are broken when the filters need cleaning and the thermal cut out trips. I know of people who have picked them up from the tip and a quick filter wash later and they are as good as new.
Mine is 13 years old and still going strong. Mind you its age means its one of the ones made in Britain, which might be why.
