NJS nipple size / rim tape

Posted on
  • So... I've got some Hoshi bladed spokes, Araya tubular rims and DA hubs in the post. Will be building 4x pattern.
But alas no nipples. I assume I should get standard brass nipples, but 12 or 14mm? Is there a NJS standard for nipple length?

And while we're on the subject, will the Miyata rim tape for attaching the tubs suffice to protect the tyre, or should there be another layer of regular Velox style tape as well?

  • The critcal thing is that the spokes are the correct length so that when tightend up the threaded end of the spoke is using the full thread length in the nipple. Also spoke end must never protude above the glueing surface of the rim. (spoke lengths will be differnt for rear drive side and non-drive side)
Rim tape can be used but I have found that tubs will be ok without tape - provided rim surface is smooth and clean before glueing.

  • Thanks Johnny, assume there is some kind of standard as all the NJS stuff is pretty much the same. E.g. 36 spokes, 4x pattern, 305mm spokes. But I take the point of needing to use up the full length of the thread and still not protruding above the rim.

So it looks like tape wise I will only be using the Miyata tape then, no glue for me!

    help me here please?

  • You need a slightly longer spoke on the non-drive side because when the wheel is built, the dishing (spoke angle from hub to rim) means there is a greater distance from hub to rim on this side compared with the drive side. ( approx 1-2mm)

  • dishing? on a fixed/fixed hub?
[even if its single fixed, the difference is not even a full 1mm..]

  • NJS certified spokes are only available in one length. It suits 36hole 4x from a high flange hub to araya gold rim. Thats it (I think it's 304?). I've got a feeling your spokes will come with nipples, ours do.

  • Hi Jammy, I sourced the spokes 2nd hand, and they don't come with nipples. Would you be able to measure the nipple length in one of your Hoshi packs? As you say the length / lacing pattern is all standardised, so I guess the nipples come in one size as well.
Note: it's going to be a double fixed rear so spokes will be the same on both sides.

  • So I got 14mm nipples, but they seem a bit long - when I screw the spoke in with a spoke driver the thread disappears in about 2mm into the spoke. Should the thread be just level with the end of the nipple facing the hub? Or does it not matter?

  • 14mm nipples are considered to be long nipples. Standard size is 12mm. I have no idea what the NJS specs say. It's quite normal for the thread to disappear inside the nipple.

  • It doesn't matter. When the wheel is up to tension, the spoke threads should be completely covered by the nipple to look pretty, but what really matters is how much of the spoke thread is engaged with nipple thread. Even on 12mm nipples, the thread doesn't start until 2 mm into the nipple. Depending on brand, the thread inside 14mm nipples is only 0 or 1 mm longer. They are only too long if you need to run the nipple thread onto the unthreaded part of the spoke.
