The best brake upgrade is a good clean and new cables. TBH, though, if it has steel wheels, the brakes will be bad whatever you do.

First new rims with decent braking surface if the wheels are steel. If they are long reach then the tektro ones are good. If they are short reach there are many threads on here that cover this. Shimano 105's do the job. ^ oh and new cables will help. Make sure the nut at the back is the correct fitting or get the drill out.

Hi this is unrelated (kind of) to this thread but as I have just joined I have been informed I need to add to three threads to verify my authenticity :-p
I have a raleigh winner that I am in the process of converting to fixed. Can anyone recommend a decent wheel set with flip flop hubs please?
Thanks

And any cheap but reliable single chainsets!
Any idea what brake callipers would fit a raleigh winner (original wheels and fork)? The current ones don't stop me too well so was considering a hopefully cheap upgrade.
