Yeah, Virgin trains need a reservation which you can only get from the station. Just show them your ticket and they'll print one for you. You can't get it over the internet or by phone; it's utterly retarded.
I got on twice when it was full. They let me squeeze mine in once. The other time I took the wheels off and brought it with me in the carriage. If you end up doing that, find the carriage that has the disabled priority seats at the front, they have loads of space around them that people just fill with massive suitcases.
That's all assuming the Birmingham Pendolinos are the same as the Manchester ones.
