could do, but theres a hell of alot of rust around the bottom bracket im not to happy with -

You should probably remove the BB to take a look around before you rule it out. Could be that the rust is only on the outside, in which case a little clean up could be all it needs to be back to its former glory.
If it's not in a serviceable order or you just want a new BB and the current BB doesn't tell you its size, measure the width and internal diameter of the shell then check out Sheldon Brown's BB size database.
I think you can simply keep the old chain rings and lay the chain on the inner one if you don't mind the 'look' of it.

Pretty cheap cranks that will probably be alright and have a compatible BB option:

It's still worth checking that yours isn't one of the Raleigh's with weird proprietary sizing / threading.

I'm looking to convert my old Raleigh Equipe to a single speed, I've stripped it of everything thus far cept the cranks and bottom bracket.
I was wondering if anyone knew what size bottom bracket and cranks I should use? I suck at that stuff.
If you could link me that would be amazing. Trying to do this on a very tight budget!
