if it is running really rough or sticking, then quickest/simplest method to ease it off is to spray into the back where the cogs spin aroundthe freewheel section with wd40 or the like. Spin it round a fair few times. Heavily spray again (you'll probably notice loads of orangy/dark crud seeping out. Repeat process a few times. Finish off with a good slug of liquid grease.
That should free up the bearings and pawls on most units enough to make it useable.
if you want loads of hassle and frustration by all means take it apart :o)
