out of interest, what'd be preferred? a spot in town or a stop off spot that is on one of the regular commuter routes (oxford road/chorlton road/barlow moor road/stockport road etc)?
-

All of the above.

I realy think Chorlton could be a winner. ive lived here for awile on Manchester road and am constanly looking out the window at cyclists riding past. places like Pi bar always have bikes locked up to the railings.

Chorlton was a bit of a saturated market a couple of years ago and a few places have gone under like Iguana and Argyles.
A cycling themed bar could be different enough to succeed though, the idea certainly is very 'Chorlton'.
I nearly didn't get through the checkpoint recently as I wasn't sporting the necessary satchel, beard and Rayban Aviators. -

I'm on Manchester Road too. Teahive, Pi, etc are in the perfect location for a cafe like that. They've got nice little terrace outside, not so big inside that the sq. footage would be mental, further lock up spots across the street, Unircorn/Barbakan encouraging people to stop off and check a bike in for a tune up while they go pick up posh groceries and/or have bike geek chatter and good coffee and beer. All you'd really need is a basic cafe/bar stock list with an inventory of bicycle parts and a mechanic/bar staff hybrid staff member to man the fort and a good mechanic stand to take work outside on a sunny day (plus rent, bills, licences, staff, produce...) In fact, this sounds an awful lot like the set up bicycle boutique and sand bar have between them (however inadvertently), but just in Chorlton.

I put myself forward as Commanding Officer, Beers Procurement. I couldn't care less about coffee.
-

Just keep a jar of Nescafé under the bar for any customers with Continental pretensions.

bike storage... coffee and cake during the day and cheap beer in the evening. If this happens it will be gutting to move away from manchester for uni.

I frequently going drinking with a friend of mine who doesn't drink alcohol as it messes up his epilepsy meds. It's interesting to see the reaction he gets asking for a coffee in the evenings. Chorlton is a nice relief from many 'traditional' bars and several places keep selling coffee up to closing time.

new place in Ancoats, http://www.koffeelock.com/ seems ok if a bit quiet. Off my beaten track but maybe close to others's?

I would ditch my office job in a heartbeat to work in a cycle themed cafe with a workshop. At the very least I would drop in for coffee and cake. Sounds amazing and I am sure it would do really well in Chorlton.

This idea ever go any further?

Pop-up bikes is these things, grab a brew and cake, puts on bike related fun-times, fixes stuff, inside bike parking, will have me working there on Wednesdays soon, what more could you want?

One closer to me in Chorlton ;)
You gonna be mechanicerising there?
-
• #43
^^ free beer...

• #44
Mechanicising and coffeeerating, not usually beer there but I guess I could drink on the job.

You have a bike, it is close to Chorlton.

One of the really nice city centre coffee shops is rumoured to be opening another in one of the parks around chorlton. Ace.
-
• #47
The waterpark?
-
• #48
Nope, council closing all that and getting rid of warden service which is a shame but another story. Plus a shop would oust the little coffee van which is often there. This would be Longford if what I hear is true & happens.
-
• #49
Yeah I'd heard the waterpark might be at risk. That'd be ridiculous. We walk the dog there, really hope it gets saved.

Half an hour in the other direction (SE) down the Trans Pennine Trail, you can get to Coffee Fix in Gatley. They're very bike friendly and have a garage in the back so just ask at the counter.
pop up bikes has no booze, but they do have cake.
