  • How stretched out is he? Should have some bend in the elbows.

  • ill have to ask him at work tomorrow. ive not seen him on the bike, its just through talking about it. ill chat to him and try and set his bike up for him.

its just that ive not heard of elbow pain. just leg or back pain.

  • tell him to put his kid down

  • Natural hand position is with the palm parallel to your thighs, not in line with your stomach (if that makes sense).

I (based on my Mighty Internet Wisdom) reckon that if his bars are dead flat/straight, then he might benefit from trying bars with a little sweep- £10 on eBay sort of thing.

  • I angle flat bar brake levers so that the wrists are basically straight when grabbing the brakes.
If his wrists are cocked up or down it's possible it is having a knock on effect but I reckon locked elbows is more likely.

  • These are painfully uncool but get glowing reviews for all things arm/wrist/finger related...

  • Random query in case anyone can shed some light on this:

last couple of rides my left foot has gone really numb. First time it happened I had been riding about 4 hours into a really strong wind and grinding away at about 60rpm, so I though it could have just been from over tensing my foot. Last couple of times it has been on short 1-2 hour rides in fairly normal conditions, and higher cadence.

What is my foot trying to communicate to me by such behaviour? Must drink more nice whisky? Get an attractive lady to massage it with scented oils?

I've not changed shoe/cleats or anything like that either. Very strange... : /

  • Shoes done up too tight?

  • No, I also thought this and made sure they were ok-thanks to RTI the usual and favoured tightness on the strap has a notch so it naturally stops in the same place.

I'm actually wondering now that you've mentioned this whether it might be all the mozzy bites round my ankles that are fucking up blood flow... hmm.

pins and needles/numbness can be caused by subconsciously scrunching up your toes in the shoes (especially when grinding). most people dont even realise that they are doing it. try splaying your toes in the shoe and make sure the axle of the pedal is directly below the ball of your foot.

  • Hmm. Will try and focus on this when I'm out next and hope it makes a difference! cheers

  • Worth considering neurovascular compromise as a result of the added effort of riding into a headwind. Could result fom the gluteals, hamstrings and calf muscles occluding neural and vascular tissue. Also tucking in on the drops will tighten the posterior chain.

  • I am sure this is well meant and very well informed but I don't know what this means. I googled 'neurovascular compromise' and i'm now shitting my pants. i am also about to reach settlement for said RTI and have had niggling doubts about how well assessed I've been as I still get pain in my sacrum/hip when riding, especially on hard efforts, which makes me think that there could be underlying issues beyond scar tissue as the cursory medical exam i had for the insurers thought. Possible this is linked to numb foot syndrome? I conked my head pretty bad as the driver was going 50mph when he took me out leaving me concussed for about 9 days.

  • Essentially the extra muscular effort can temporarily squash the nerves and blood vessels going in to the leg which will cause the tingling / burning / numbness.
Insurance medicals are generally quite generic and non-specifc. Scrotum pain / numbness is not normal unless related to saddle pressure. Any loss of control of bladder and bowel function is also not good and would need more urgent assessment but this should have been cleared on day 1. PM if you have any specific queries.
