  • just moved to switzerland and the down hills are killing my tires. just went through a fresh pair of Halo couriers in 3weeks. keep my skidding to a minimum but can only do so much with all the down hill here. any advice on what to switch up to??

  • A brake.

  • Gator hardshell.

  • marathon plus seems to be quite fat on the rubber side. Do they last long?

a brake perhaps would help too, I would not ride in an area with steep hills brakeless

  • cool thanks for the advice i'll give them a shot.

  • So spending £30 on new tyres every couple or so month is a much better value than spending £30 on a front brake to preserve such tyres.

    make sense.

  • Pretty disappointed in my Gatorskin, only been on the rear for exctly a month and already showing some serious wear and afew hefty chunks missing, barely lasting any longer than my standard ultra race. Are Hardskins really that much better?

This is just a standard wirebead but still expected a little better

  • hardshell rulz, been running mine for 2 months, few cuts and worn bits but nothing compare to what normal gator would look like by now. It also depends is you skid to show off, I try no to waste my tyres

  • a normal gatorskin will last me 3 weeks, a hardshell will last 3 months.

  • Life is one long skid to me.... I had an old gator that lasted well, but have just been through a new standard one in what seems like not a long time. Will be exclusively hardshells from here, anyone know if the 25c's are thicker (haz moar rubba) or are they just bigger?

  • Not too sure on that one, I run them anyway for a bit of dampening. I suspect they're just bigger.

  • ran conti ultra sport on the back and it was awful, still have one on the front and it works well. got a schwalbe lugano on the rear now (25c) and it's holding up pretty good, glass cuts and everything else considered.

  • a normal gatorskin will last me 3 weeks, a hardshell will last 3 months.

    3 weeks? seriously?

    how are you skidding?

  • usually by stopping the pedals with my feet.

  • Pleasantly surprised by my 28c Zaffiro, very cheap n cheerful, only 8 quid.

  • My LBS has been gave me a good deal on some Specialized Robaix's which have lasted quite nicely, they're 23c but have 25c worth of rubber. They have lasted a couple of months doing about 150 miles a week which I think is quite impressive especially as I haven't had a single puncture in that time. I replaced my rear this evening and decided to cut my old tyre to see how much it had worn on a section where there was a small patch of puncture protection showing, turns out they have quite a bit of rubber left on them and could have been ridden for a bit longer. They do become quite slow when the start to square off but thats to be expected, they grip well in the wet too which is a bonus.

  • Continental Supersport Plus vs Gatorskid hardshell? Anyone got any direct comparisons, all i care about is which lasts longer really. The supersport is about a tenner cheaper in most places

  • hardshell.

  • A bit off topic here, but i thought it was a good place to ask

Thinking of getting some Gator's for my girlfriends bike, so my question is, how easy are they to get on? like compared to Rando's for example.

    Thanks.

  • Not as hard as Rando's. But the wire bead ones can still be a bit tricky. Use a good tyre lever for the final part and it's fine.

  • Okay, thanks sumo.

  • A&P, it's down to your rims, rather than the tyres, some seated easily, some are harder.

  • Yeah true, but some tyres are generally tighter, some are generally not so tight, id like to put Rando's on her bike, but she's not exactly a bike mechanic so i don't want another Rando v scoble incident (yes i read about your fun time with Rando's)

She seems pretty set on getting the Charge Hob 3, so it will be for what rims that has...

Sorry, off top again, waiting for a frame to be delivered and i'm bored as shit.

  • a normal gatorskin will last me 3 weeks, a hardshell will last 3 months.

I've had a normal gatorskin on the rear for about 8 months and it still has life in it!

  • I was talking for riding brakeless with.
