  • and I've been spending way too much time on here lately.

  • @Marcom..

as far as I understand 'art', all you have to do is say that it's art and it just is..

For example, an embalmed shark, unmade bed, lobster telephone or upside down urinal are put into a building that defines them as art and hey, presto.. In this case, likewise for an un-usable mock up of a shop.

  • I don't know if it's better to laugh or cry after this. :)

Anyway, what you're saying it seems to be pretty close to reality, nowadays. :(

  • The captions are a tough one. Sometimes they really help tell the story, other times they detract from the story you have built in your mind.

    I couldn't agree more.

Nowadays? Duchamps' fountain is 95 years old!

  • Yes, but it's nowadays that it becomes art... :)

  • It was art from the start wasn't it?

  • Well, if you say so, you are the art expert; I'm here only for the pics.

It's not art because I say so, it is because the artist decided it was (which is the point of the piece/series).

and that ^ needs to be on a NSFW tag really.

  • It depend on which work you are in.

  • I see, sort of a 'look away now' arrangement?

  • to me that's definitely NSFW

  • ^^You work on War, I work on Love. Then, time to time, we can exchange the subjects.

  • It should be a link; it's not an argument about art, it's just being considerate of people reading this thread.

  • Besides - you are all missing out on the best part of Marfa, Texas.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marfa_lights

That part of the world is one of the most desolately beautiful parts of the US. I would encourage anyone to go spend some time at Big Bend National Park.

    +1 for the desolate beauty..

Not sure about the Lights - my girlfriend and I sat out there all night staring at the desert and everything we 'saw' looked like very distant car lights to us..

Anyway, Donald Judd's Chinati Foundation is absolutely the best thing about Marfa - though the breakfast in the local diner comes a close second..

  • even imageshack agrees its nsfw

  • Duchamp's Fountain was an avant garde statement putting forwards the idea that anything, no matter how ordinary or menial, can be considered art once it has received the attention of an artist i.e. through a signature and/or a new meaning attributed to it. It caused a huge stir because it was barred from being exhibited from the show it was entered into because the curators couldn't decide whether it was art or not. It is now considered one of the first prominent examples of conceptual art, and Duchamp was the original creator of the 'readymade' art piece, and the reason that unmade beds can be nominated for Turner Prizes.

  • More relevant to the forum:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_Wheel. "I enjoyed looking at it," he said. "Just as I enjoy looking at the flames dancing in the fireplace." It was not until he began making readymades a few years later in New York that he decided Bicycle Wheel was a readymade.[1]
The original from 1913 was lost, and Duchamp recreated the sculpture in 1951.
Bicycle Wheel is said to be the first http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinetic_sculpture.[[2]](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bicycle_Wheel#cite_note-1)

  • tyres flat 3/10

  • enormous clearance too

  • What's coming out the bottom of the fork?

The purest definition of art is anything made by man. To Narrow it down more than that ends up being very subjective.
