Never understood why they used those. Anyone care to enlighten me? It's always struck me as particularly fucking stupid to design a stem that asks a rigid, brittle material prone to fatigue to flex in order to work properly. It also makes it way too easy to over tighten them, as demonstrated by OP.
But yeah, if it is aluminium, and has been forced apart too far, it's probably knackered. Show us a picture anyway though.
