ok now I think I need a faster ratio, should I make the rear cog smaller from 17t or chain ring bigger from 47t ?
-
• #1328
cheaper to do the rear cog and you still have lottsa skid patches

No.
Pedal faster.

Currently running 42/16, perfect for where I live as there's a decent climb on the way home from town/college.
Would there be much of a difference with 42/15? I find myself spinning out on the descents most of the time, but would it be a lot harder on hills?

• #1331
42/15 at the moment, and loving it thus far.

51/19, finding it slow: is going to 17 or 15 going to hurt much?
-
• #1333
Only if you crash.

• #1334
51x19 sounds perfect to me...
-
• #1335
my commute is mostly straight and mostly flat, so looking for more top end speed
-
• #1336
so the title is "what's your favourite gear ratio?"
I'm not too clever at maths, but the likes of 50/19 is not a ratio. wouldn't the ratio be 2.63:1

in that case, 51x17 shouldn't be too heavy.

51/15 is too high for riding on the road.
51/19 sounds good, just spin faster

don't know if you skid much but 51/17 is one skid patch (or two if you skid with either foot forward). whereas 51/19 is 19 and 51/18 is 6.

49x17 for real deal
47x17 to sit back and relax -
• #1341
you got a flip flop crank?

I hadn't realised it was so few patches, I do have a 52T I can swap it out for, 52/17 gives a mucho patches. I want more top end speed whilst maintaining my cadence, and making sure I don't get pwned by fair-weather nodders on hybrids. Got overtaken by one today: Fair play the guy had calves like Wiggo (so not a nodder at all, far from it) but it was still a hybrid. Said 'alright mate' as he went past too, which was nice.

44x17 is what I run.

^ Is that not incredibly spinny or do you live at the foot of a mountain and work at the top?

How spinny is "incredibly spinny"? Just out of curiosity, mind.

44x17 is not incredibly spinny, doing 20 mph you'll be doing around 95 RPM.
-
• #1347
going from 44/16 to 47/16. looking for some more top end and a bunch more skid patches. win win.

I found 48x18 which is about 72 GI far to spinny on the flats, 44x17 is under 68/9 GI so I would imagine it would be quite spinny. Maybe not to others, each to their own I guess.

• #1349
60gi is spinny
50 is incredibly spinny
40 is only for polo.68 is pretty standard, remember that most people don't just ride 'on the flats' (I'm assuming that's a reference to topology rather than pedals)

It's pretty hilly where I live but I had always been under the assumption that anything under 70 gi was gearing down. It's all about personal preference I guess, ride what your comfortable with.
60% speed and 40% cocaine.
