  • It would appear that someone has made a store purchase from Evans using my Evans account ... not sure yet if they've used my money or whether it is an error from in-store, should find out soon. Found out about it on receiving a 'thank you for shopping with ... ' email. They are on the case trying to find out what happened.

If you see anyone in an XL white base layer and a grey merino buff ...

  • I used to use Evans in The Cut, before my company moved a few years ago, and they seemed pretty good.

Recently decided to get a road bike, went into Evans Spitafields and ordered a bike, and am still waiting 3 weeks later. I called them Friday, and there was a lot of um and errr-ing, before a vague promise it might be in soon. Not exactly great.

The latter's possible, must've clicked the wrong postcode without double checking.

  • Edscoble Evans cycles' LFGSS rep

  • I ordered a tyre from them on 7 May. Still no sign of it on 12 June, despite harassing them via email and their twatter account.

That'll learn me not to use my LBS. :-(

  • Excellent service every time I go in, with knowledgeable and helpful staff, despite being very busy. The only place who could release stuck seatpost. Recommended.

  • Bought a pair of Specialized MTB shoes from the Gt Portland St branch yesterday. Ozzy guy that served me was very friendly, knowledgeable, willing to spend enough time to ensure I bought the right type/size.

    Best Evans experience to date.

  • Bought a chain that disintegrated after 1.5 miles of road riding. As it was bought over 90 days ago, the rude and unhelpful people at the customer service centre say they can't do anything about it

Probably not using Evans ever again, but I'll make a nuisance of myself by emailing the CEO first

  • contact the chain manufacturer. Evans shouldn't have been rude and unhelpful but you should still try and get a refund.

  • Unfortunately I've just had a pretty terrible experience with Evans' online service. Ordered a System Ex flip flop hub on 30th and still hadn't received it this morning, so I called them up to ask what was going on. Apparently it's out of stock, so I asked for a refund. Just checked their website and all 3 variations of their System Ex rear hub are still listed as in stock.

I also ordered a Brooks B17 saddle which arrived in 4 working days but the packing was already torn up. Aye, aye, aye. Got faster shipping from JE James, Wiggle, Planet X and every single seller I've used on eBay, all of which was free. Not to mention that Evans seems a little more expensive on parts than other stores. I think that's a wrap for me, pretty disappointing experiences.

  • Evans do online pricematch instore. Which is handy.

  • I just went into Evans with my girl to get her a road bike and Justin in The Cut branch has been awesome. Very knowledgable about kit, set-up, listened to what my girlfriend was interested in and generally just a sound chap - and he ordered in a better size for her and built it himself. Said he will prioritise us when we head back tonight. Dude is fucking awesome.

The other staff however, other than a smallish girl who was also lovely, are mostly just wandering around like fucking Rain Man in slow motion. AWFUL.

  • is there an evans rant thread or is it called PM scoble ?

  • My Ride2Work certificate has just arrived, so I think I'll pop into The Cut and seek out Justin tonight.

I'm probably just getting a Brompton S2L, but it's always good to deal with someone knowledgeable.

  • Always happy with Evans in Crawley. They did a great price match on my Brooks B17 Special even though it was being offered at a lower price elsewhere as part of a bundle. I didn't think they would match as it wasn't like for like but they did.

  • I'm starting to really like Evans in Notting Hill. They're always helpful and willing to go out their way - bar one guy anyway, who's fairly young and extremely patronising, but you can't have it all!

  • **The following accessories are allowed under the scheme:
    **• Cycle helmets
    • Bells and bulb horns
    • Lights, including dynamo packs
    • Mirrors and mudguards to ensure riders visibility is not impaired
    • Cycle clips and dress guards
    • Panniers, luggage carriers and straps to allow luggage to be safely carried
    • Locks and chains to ensure cycle can be safely secured
    • Pumps, puncture repair kits, cycle tool kits and tyre sealant to allow for minor repairs
    • Reflective clothing along with white front reflectors and spoke reflectors
**You cannot purchase non-essential items such as: **
    • Downhill helmets
    • Energy food
    • Cycling shoes
    • Car racks
    • Child trailers (child seats are permitted)
    • Computers & heart rate monitors
    • Components such as pedals, brakes, chains, hubs etc
    • Non-essential clothing such a glasses, hats, socks (permitted clothing items include reflective jackets, trousers, shorts and gloves)

For fuck's sake! I'm struggling to spend my £1k voucher thanks to their stupid restrictions. I've got £810 on the S2l, but want to make the most of the rest of it.

Apparently, puncture proof tyres (Marathon Plus) are a non-essential item, and so aren't allowed under their Ride2Work scheme. I'd also consider glasses to be an essential piece of safety equipment, certainly more than trouser clips.

Would they be as arsey in store or will a friendly clerk just scan it all in?

  • £190 worth of lube? You can't beat nice lube.

  • Is the restriction new? cause I'm pretty sure I sold computers, shoes, pedals, etc. under the Ride2Work scheme for the last two years (and the other staffs did).

No idea. I took it straight from the website. It is probably worth my while going into the shop and playing dumb and arguing them down if the restrictions come up.

Given that you're not allowed to buy an inner tube, lube is probably off the list. Lube should always be an option.

  • You can't beat some good locks too - if you bought two you could keep one at work so you didn't need to carry it with you?
    And a good track pump?

  • I already have 3 locks with one left at work, and a great track pump. My toolbox has most eventualities covered, and I have a seatbag with a decent multitool. I suppose a CO2 kit would be useful, but it would just be spending for the sake of it.

Sod it, I'm just going to have to blag it.

  • You know it just occurs to me Lardboy that I saw you down there looking at Bromptons! Was it a black one? I was there with my girl setting up her Pinnacle and wrapping pink bartape. We got £100 of free accessories with her bike - got a Brooks saddle, lube (of course), lights and gloves. I'm sure you can freestyle it if you go in person...

  • That was me. Fame at last!

I saw you (double?) wrapping the bars, and thought you were a braver man than me. I lose my patience so easily when wrapping bars that I'd want a nice calm quiet place to do it, not the corner of a shop.

The Pinnacles look like decent value bikes. The designer from Genesis responsible for the Croix de Fer moved across to head up the Evans design team a couple of years ago and his influence shows on those bikes.

The guy I was chatting to was called "Hollywood". I had to check my eyes were working when I saw his name tag. Could be a Top Gun thing.
