Really enjoyed this last time (despite feeble dawn chorus). Have a 9am meeting, so plan is to power on through! WIll prob see you at London Bridge.

  • Are you any good at powder coating? ;)

? I've got some talcum powder and I've got a coat. Is that any good?

  • Er, that could result in some rather interesting results.

Have booked the day off after last year mega-confusion. Ma Poots is coming to visit that Londons the same day though - not sure if my invitation to her is continuing the madness!

May very well meet you at LB too KT thinks

  • Feeder ride details for those interested:

Where: Midsummer Madness – feeder ride from Greenwich
    When: Wednesday 20 June 2012
    Meet: 01:45 @ Cutty Sark Gardens, SE10 9LW

The nighttime summer solstice ride to greet the dawn on Primrose Hill is drawing near. The solstice this year is on Wednesday 20 June, and, as in years past, to celebrate the longest day of the year there will be a mass ride to Primrose Hill, with the spirit of Barry Mason along to keep us company.

The main ride will set off from Southwark Needle at 02:30, and make its way at a sedate pace through the largely empty streets of central London. There will be a coffee break at Bar Italia on Frith Street, and, if it's anything like last year, a breakfast stop on the way back. LCC office manager Lu Everett and her beau Dick Vincent are in charge.

I shall be leading a feeder ride from Greenwich Cutty Sark Gardens to Southwark Needle, departing no later than 02:00. Needless to say, lights are obligatory, as is a blood-alcohol level of less than 80mg/100ml. If I spot any tins of Special Brew, they will be confiscated!

this is tonight! Well, tomorrow morning - who is starting from LB?

  • Shit! Job interview at midday tomorrow..

Reckon I'll just go to bed extra early today, try and make up for it.. Good move?

  • Thanks Poots!

I was just about to say: Tomorrow (Wednesday, 20 June) is the longest day of the year (Summer Solstice). Join us on our annual pilgrimage (all levels of cycling ability welcome; bring lights and a spare innertube) through largely silent London streets to see the sunrise from the top of Primrose Hill (by London Zoo) -- magical and atmospheric and no doubt there will be the usual druids and other sun worshipper to keep us entertained.

This year it seems we are almost certain to see the sun come up (4.43am) in a fairly cloud-free sky. In my experience, to actually see the Summer Solstice sunrise is fairly rare.

    Timings are as follows:

1.45am (departure no later than 2am) **Cutty Sark Gardens **(Francis Sedgemore leading a feeder ride to London Bridge; Colin helping)
2.30am Southwark Needle outside Evans bike shop at the south end of London Bridge (Dick Vincent and Lu Everett leading from here; Francis and Colin helping)
3am Bar Italia, 25 Frith Street in Soho, for coffee and toilet stop (leaving about 3.45am)
4.30am on the top of **Primrose Hill **(where magic happens, it's official; wonderful view over London)
    4.43am Sunrise
6am **Regents Canal Lock 7 **in Hackney (where something special will be laid on for us thanks to Dick)

Don't know if I have the energy for it but hope to be there...

  • Very excited about this - have dug out my hipflask ready to toast the sunrise withhomemade cherry vodka. Will be starting from LB.

I can't see any risks with that at all ...

  • I can't see any risks with that at all ...

Neither can I.. excellent. See you there!

Hipflask and then heading to work for a 9am meeting? Chapeau!

Cherry vodka sounds yummy though - do you just steep/infuse cherries in some decent vodka?

Hope you can make it Alex! xx

  • so last night I kept hearing people on the radio and tv going on about the summer solstice on thursday. needless to say I got the wind-up, and had to re-check that it was in the early hours of tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. How can something so simple be so complicated?

  • I hear its been cancelled

  • What? The solstice??

  • It has NOT been cancelled - you are naughty whatok!

We have spoken with the lovely Katherine at Lock 7 and she is working on a special vegetarian menu and getting ready to open up super early for us tomorrow morning.

Also, my friend Neave is going to come along tonight (probably meet you all at the London Bridge meeting point) with a small film crew to film the ride and get some vox pops/short interviews.

Poots I will try. Haven't stopped today though.

  • Awesome. Sounds grand. Hopefully see you later Alex : )

  • blimey! I've just asked my middle son if he wants to come along and he say yes.

    #nooneisgoingtobelieveimonlytwentyfivenow

  • Great!

    How old is your son?

  • I'm really sorry to keep dipping in and out, but I have to be at work early now for a very long day and as I only started there on Monday I don't think they'd be that impressed if I turned up late and having been up half the night. Was genuinely looking forward to this but you'll have to count me out I'm afraid.

Excuses excuses, blah blah, etc. etc.
