Mavic Open Pro Ceramic
£75 each
Black braking surface.

the ceramics are more grey than black ;)

Yep definitely more grey than black for Open Pro CD (don't need to be ceramic though so could save some £s as the standard CDs keep their colour on the braking surface)

hey guys tried searching on here, and through the google site search (for here and anything else) and couldnt find anything!
after as stealth as possible wheelset, after nothing too expensive as its just for my commuter (that gets left outside, so id like to come back to them).
wanting completely matte black wheelset, currently have a set of the cheap no logo ones which are perfect, except that the black braking surface is already starting to rub off and therfore no long black :(
any ideas?
was thinking H+ but do they have any in freewheel ?

Brake less

i do my best but others dont seem to appreciate my dilemma.

basically something like this.... but in single and that isnt going to rub off!

aluminum used in costructing rims is silver colored. So it is going to be colored by painting it or anodizing. Both of these wear off in use with brakes. Ride brakeless, go carbon or put a disc brake on the bike.

thankyou for the only sensible post so far!
i was fearing this might have been the case:(
to go fixed would mean a new frame as i havnt got horizontal dropouts.... and to go carbon means me constantly worrying about them getting stolen :(
just cant win!

they are great! none moar black, and will stay black 4 evz. and well cheap. -

Just sharpie them in occasionally if you really care that much. Seems a bit pointless though.
Either that or you could make sure they're always really dirty - that way the silver alu surfaces will always be dull and dark

options as far as I can see them:
- brakeless fixed: Lots of people do this but personally I don't think it's safe, having the chain come off at high speed this one time inspired me to put a brake on all my bikes.
- coaster brake: requires horizontal dropouts and a tab for the arm to bolt on to. Not suited for a fast bike, at least not on its own. On a fast bike you want to install a front brake too.
- drum brakes: also require tabs but no need for horizontal dropouts. Swapping out the fork for one with a tab would be pretty easy. However it might be difficult to find a "performance" oriented fork with drum tabs.
- disc brakes: same pros and cons as drum brakes but better performance.
- rims with ceramic coated braking surcace: Mavic Open Pro ceramic come to mind. They have a ceramic coated braking surface that's designed to not wear. It's not pitch black, but close enough. Expensive though, and require dedicated braking shoes.

^ not true - you can use non-specific brake blocks, they will just wear a little quicker
-
• #48
The real solution here is silver.
Silver wheels usually look less bling and more common - especially in standard spoke counts and paterns.
You also have no worries of the side wall colour coming off.

Of course you can use regular brake pads. You can also use cork ones for carbon braking surfaces.

Unless you're running carbon rims painted silver. Then eventually you're going to wear down to the black.
Life sucks.
My 6 year old pushes the toes of his trainers into the ground to stop. Could try that. I'll tell you what I tell him though. I'm not buying you new fucking trainers every 5 mins you ungrateful cunt.
I've got black nips.
