  • Most 29er disc wheels should work unless you want to run really skinny tyres.

    A: Why would you buy a Pompetamine and run skinny tyres?
    B: Most XC oriented 29er wheels are still using ridiculously skinny rims anyway, so you can still use 23c road race tyres on many of them if you must.

    FWIW, I'm using Kris Holm XC rims laced to Hope hubs, but if you have a bit more cash the Salsa Gordo looks like a nice option. There's loads of 29er choices out there these days, so it's hard to give a definitive recommendation without knowing what tyres you're going to use and how much you want to spend. I'd definitely be thinking custom build rather than boxed wheels, and this from the man who says 99% of road riders would be better off on Mavic Aksiums/Shimano RS30s if they put their pretension aside.
