aluminum used in costructing rims is silver colored. So it is going to be colored by painting it or anodizing. Both of these wear off in use with brakes. Ride brakeless, go carbon or put a disc brake on the bike.

i was fearing this might have been the case:(
to go fixed would mean a new frame as i havnt got horizontal dropouts.... and to go carbon means me constantly worrying about them getting stolen :(
