  • As for tape. I was told by a local tub fiend that the general rule is:

    Italian tubs - velox tape
    German tubs - tufo tape

Apparently the base tape and, adhesive, tape material combinations above work well together.

  • I thought it was tufo for tufo and anything else for anything else as tufo takes the basetape with it on removal..

  • It was done by a mechanic friend of mine- and yes it was the three on the rim and one on the tyre technique.

Having just come back from a sportive where I got two pinch flats I'm very receptive to the idea of tubs, but I have "the fear" when it comes to getting them on and off.

Unlucky. Needs to build up finger strength!

  • Rev - £20 posted without the glue any good to you?

  • Unlucky. Needs to build up finger strength!

I've got two tubs stretching right now, they are going on with Velox tape as an experiment to see what it's like.

  • oooops!

  • Rancid......if you go to £25 posted we can shake on it! (or two for £40)

  • I had a bad experience with Velox tape in the wet- the tub was able to roll in the rim to the point of straining the valve, I was on Manchester Velodrome at the time and the bike had been on the roof rack in the torrential rain.

Apart from that I've always cocked up a rim tape, so I stick with glue- pun not actually intended, on the road its a thin layer of glue, for the track its deeper.

I find the difficult part if you're going have one taking a tub off is getting a start - I've used flat bladed screw drivers to ease up a section between tub & rim, then lift it, and tear the rest of the tub off.

Works for me, but I've not ridden tubs on the road for some time, although if in a TT they're the preference

  • Carbon rim- didn't feel comfortable sticking a screwdriver in there.

I used a plastic tyre lever, fairly gingerly- once I'd got enough unstuck to be able to pull a section of the tyre over the edge of the rim it went fairly fast.

Still took ages mind, compared to a clincher.

  • try getting a tubeless MTB tyre off, or on- much tighter than the duck's arse.....
