My cats father (as near as we can establish, as his mother put herself about with vigour) was a one eyed tomcat who was famed locally due to most of the cat owners in the close having tried to tame him at somepoint, and all having been rebuffed.
He'd roam away, then come back, then be off again and seemed to enjoy it.
The downside of course is that he'd lost an eye at somepoint, and if he became ill he would be totally on his own- whilst a lot of people will take in the smiling rogue I suspect the leper gets a harder road.
