  • Just noticed the colour change. Should I be worried?

  • have you tried cleaning it?

  • Yes. Well, I tried to wipe it off with my fingers. Not sure if that counts. But it seems it is a change in the aluminum. The wheel is straight. I checked that. And the spoke tension seemed okay as well.

  • even if one spoke pulls through the rim it won't catastrophically damage the wheel my road warrior / commuter had a few spokes that had ripped out of the rims and there was a very slight buckle but was plenty rideable

  • Okay. I guess I'll just follow the situation.

The bike in question is a Visp and the wheels are 36h Open Pro-DT Champ-Formulas. And I weigh 86 kilos. I do not remember hitting anything super hard, but as I doubt the frame or fork do any bending, might well be the wheels have taken all the punishment.

  • it looks like general stress around the eyelets rather than a whack

  • Oxidising alu? My old Mavics looked a bit like this.

Run your finger over the rim (ooh nurse!) braking surface and feel for concaves (worn braking surface might indicate potential weakness) or run your finger over the rim near the spoke - notice any bumps?

  • Will do that after I leave work.

I did a quick check of the rim (naught, naughty!) when I first noticed the change, but did not see or feel anything out of the ordinary. Will be more thorough this time around.

  • I checked the Mavic and could not feel anything unusual, no concaves nor bumps. So I guess I should not worry too much.

  • carry on and keep calm

  • Will do.
