  • Well I just purchased this frameset for my first build...
    Nice frame, nice view!

    It looks like the top of the seat tube narrows, so chances are you'll need a non-standard seat post size.

    If you're lucky it will be 25.somethingIcan'tremember mm; if it's 24mm be prepared to pay around £50 (if you can find one).

  • If you can't find a 24mm seatpost, you can get a 22.2 BMX seatpost and use some .9mm brass sheet to make a shim - or various other permutations of these figures to get it up to 24mm.

  • Yeah i have a pivotal seat and post lying around so if its 24mm i think i'll use that for the time being as im on a budget really and i used that brass to make it fit my old mountain bike.

    It looks like a square taper crank, rather than anything more modern, so you'll have plenty of choice.

    Which cranks will give you the right chain line, will depend on the length of the spindle: you need to measure that.

    Having said that, you can get a new BB for around £20 (either loose bearing or sealed cartridge).

    Have a look upthread, where I posted some links to a site with details about dating old Pugs and what threads Peugeot used and when.

    Most likely an English BB, but double check before buying a new one.

    Velobase.com is your friend! In the example I've linked to, if you look in the section under the photos, on the left is "BB Length": this will tell you what length of spindle you need (hover over the "?" for an explanation).

    If you're going to dabble in old Campag (the groupset name was added to parts from 1995) then you should become familiar with Velobase: lots of gear on eBay is not what the seller would have you believe it is...

    As for whether being made in France affects the BB, you would know the answer to this if you had read what I linked to upthread.

  • Currently winging it's way to me is this unknown Reynolds 501 tubed red pug. It was cunningly labeled as "Peugeot Vitesses". Seller obviously not versed in French. It's currently sporting Cinelli stem and Cinelli criterium bars, Sachs Huret Rival rear mech, Mavic Module E 700c rims, Nervar cranks, simplex shifters, weinmann brakes, 105 levers.

    Can't for the life of me match the spec and frame decal colours to anything from the catalogues. Red frame with black decal never seems to occur. Always white decals. It's possible parts have been upgraded along the way. I'm not going to argue to cinelli bits hanging off of it.

    Plans are to remove the mechs, rear brake, gear and brake levers and install a dirty harry on the bar tops. I've a planet-x AL30 black fixed/fixed wheelset and a 16t cog screwed on ready to go. Some fizik arione copy by planet X and some black matching bar tape. Can't wait to take delivery tomorrow and get it built up.

    Any idea whether I'll get a good chain line on that chainset? Presume the wheelset is 42mm as it's a 120mm track wheelset.

    That style of Peugeot logo and the "rainbow" decal scheme date it to between 1984 to 1988.

    Have a look at the hubs, Maillard were common OE and use a plain date code of two groups of two numbers, with the first group being the week and the second being the year.

    Obviously the Cinelli cockpit isn't original, but everything else could be. However, if the 105 levers were OE then you would expect to see Shimano throughout, so I think they were an upgrade.

  • Bike's arrived. I'm getting excited now :) Can't wait to unbox and commence the build tonight.

  • Broke bike down and removed all unnecessary components (saved for future restoration). It looks like I will get a good chainline by just mounting the inner ring in place of the big ring with some single chainring bolts. Does this sound right? I've tried holding a ruler against the chainring in position and it looks good on the hub. I draped a 1/8th chain over too and that looked good but it was too short to complete the chain.

    The confusion over the model is due to somebody having rattle canned the frame in red but they masked off the decals beforehand. Evidence of that metallic sky blue colour from the 80s underneath. They did a bad job as there is evidence of red paint on the casette and spokes! Still it;s good enough for commuter duties and another layer of paint will help protect it. Its fine at a glance

    Are you selling the shifters? I've put an 8 speed wheel in my old Pug, but only have 6 speed indexed shifters: messy...

  • Pictures tomorrow. It was getting dark by the time I'd finished tonight and hopefully I can pick up a chain and lockring tool to complete the build tomorrow too.

  • Here we go then. Build complete bar trimming the brake cable and tightening the lockring when I borrow a tool. Just had a couple of quick spins around the cul-de-sac and position all seems good. Now I just need to learn to ride the thing. Foot retention in the form of SPDs will be coming once I'm comfortable with low speed maneuvering.

  • Slow speed manoeuvring? Think it's advisable to have some foot retention when you ride it, even to start off with.

  • Yeh fair enough. I installed the SPDs this morning and rode my usual rolling commute. Cautious at first but soon got the feel for it. Only tried to freewheel once. Smiling by the time I got to work.

    I would say that those Criterium bars are not great for climbing though. I work up a 10% hill and whilst the 42x16 gearing was fine (i'd not want any steeper hills though) purchase on the tops was poor. Shame, as I'm not that fond on the look of bull bars but I think they may be the best solution here. I've got some crap bars I can chop and flip to try anyway.

  • The shape of the Criterium is intended for track/TT/sprinting; Giro D'Italia or Campione Del Mondo would be better suited to regular road use, as they both have full width tops.

    Depending on their width I'd be interested in the bars as well as your shifters: do they have cable grooves?

    They go for good money when they ,very rarely, crop up on eBay.

    Magic Bike Mike is your best bet: either one of his custom made posts or a shim for 22.2mm posts.

  • Sorry I forgot to respond about the shifters. They're 6 speed and I think you were after 8 speed? The bars don't have any grooves for cabling either. I might keep the bars while I work out what works best for me.

    The seatpost came with the bike. I don't think it's marked with a brand or model and It's been cut by previous owner, but luckily I don't need much post showing due to being a short arse in the inside leg.

  • No problem, I'm actually after friction as I've got 6 speed shifters at the moment and thought yours were Super LJ.
