  • Anyway, if anyone has any advice for cats with arthritis let me know.

We're about to try a bioforce collar on our dog. They are magnetic collars that are supposed to help with arthritis - people use magnetic bracelets with similar effect. Quite a few people I know have used them with their animals and swear by them.

Think someone might already have mentioned reiki (or healing with hands). Haven't used it for arthritis but have used it to help a dying cat make the decision to go. I brought in the poorly cat and she settled on the reiki practitioner's lap. Then one by one my two other cats and the dog came in. They were all so chilled - was amazing to see.

Some might consider it a bit controversial but I've also used homeopathy to treat arthritis in dogs. A friend's dog was on metacam but had to come off because of renal insufficiency. I gave her a combination remedy of Rhus Tox/Ruta/Arnica at potency 6X (which means there's still some active substance left for the sceptical) four times daily. It worked really well, much better than the metacam according to the owner. You can get the combination from Helios pharmacy online.

  • Not my pet, but this cat is at Battersea at the moment. Got damn I am in love. If I didn't already have three I'd take William straight away.

oh man. definitely can't show my girlfriend this

  • Not much joy on Arthritis treatments I'm afraid. The most effective treatment ( from experience ) appears to have been Cystaid.

    Or the slightly cheaper Cystease.

Both are intended for treatment of Cystitis, but it's the Glucosamine that helps the Arthritis. However, as the Seraquin George is already on contains Glucosamine and Chondroitin, I don't suppose that would be much use :-( Especially if he already enjoys the Seraquin.

The medication Jazz was taking briefly was Rimadyl, which is basically an anti-inflammatory. It really had him active for little while. This was now about 12 years ago though & it's no longer prescribed for cats, due to the nasty side effects. ( Still for dogs though )

I can see why you might worry about Metacam, as at 14 there's going to be a higher risk of kidney damage. It's unfortunately one of those awkward decisions where you way up length of life vs quality of life.

The therapy certainly seems like a good move though & I hope George has a good few years of fishcakes to look forward to :-)

    • Has the Vet ruled out Lungworm as the cause of the cough? If so, a dose of Panacur should should cure that.
  • Just thought I'd post a link to the cat charity my mum helps with. ( fosters & runs the website )

I don't know if I'm allowed to post up links to charities on here, so please have this removed if it's inappropriate.

  • Thanks BareNecessities. The vet said that lungworm was rare for cats but again she said that she can only know if she does an x-ray. I might do it early August when I've got time to look after him.

Thanks for being open, these are exactly the options I was considering.

  • Took the hounds out to play in a secure field, being ex-racers they have been trained from a young age to run away after the small furry thing and under no circumstances turn back.... hence their recall is pretty poor.

They had fun - only had my phone but managed to grab this shot of Caleb gambling through the long grass:

  • Nosy puss.

  • Happened upon a very mangey looking cat lying on the pavement on the way home today. Don't usually see cats lying out on the street so it caught my eye. Was very friendly but I didn't want to touch it too much as it looked infested. Really matted fur, gunk pouring from its mouth, really sore eyes and very skinny. :( Knocked on a couple of doors to see if I could locate the owner but no luck. And when I returned to the pavement it had disappeared into one of the gardens. It's only at the end of my street so I bobbed home to grab some cat treats and a cat box to nab it and take to the vets but couldn't find it.

Fuck the sort of people that allow that to happen to a cat.

  • My cats father (as near as we can establish, as his mother put herself about with vigour) was a one eyed tomcat who was famed locally due to most of the cat owners in the close having tried to tame him at somepoint, and all having been rebuffed.

He'd roam away, then come back, then be off again and seemed to enjoy it.

The downside of course is that he'd lost an eye at somepoint, and if he became ill he would be totally on his own- whilst a lot of people will take in the smiling rogue I suspect the leper gets a harder road.

I'm really jealous of your dogs, dan. jelly, in fact.

  • Dylan

  • Our cats are quite similar, even down to the ginger splodge on the belly (which you'll have to take my word for).

Amazing! Dreaming of the day my girlfriend and I have our own place so we can adopt a couple of ex-racers (and 6 chickens and a couple of goats).

Animals are fun, especially chickens which are so much more interesting that you'd expect. You'll end up being enemies with foxes though.

  • my friends cat

Holy majoly great shot V-L :-)

  • This is little 6 month old Figolu, my Brother's French pussy cat. He was attacked by a dog and has had an infected leg, which he can't walk on very well. He's also been gnawing away at the wound, and the vet thinks he's trying to get at a nerve which is obviously causing discomfort, hence now he has a collar. He's on the mend but there is still a chance he will lose the leg. He's a lovely bold little thing and he makes a 'mreep' noise on every stair of the staircase!
