Further to this email I am now in a position to update you in respect of the fire alarm activating this morning.

A cycle courier having delivered to one of our tenants at Aldgate House was exiting the building from the reception lifts and immediately proceeded to press the GREEN access controls button situated on the wall adjacent to the barrier arms. Our team security guard based at the barrier proceeded to advise the courier that this was not necessary as he will swipe the barrier for him to allow him through, (this is as our agreed procedures as couriers do not have access cards)

The courier took offence to this and became confrontational, we can only assume that he was in a hurry and proceeded to argue and blaspheme to our security guard. After allowing him through the barrier the courier continued his offensive comments as he walked through to the post room corridor, our team security guard realising that he was leaving the reception area resumed his place at the reception barriers.

On scrutiny of our CCTV camera system, the courier can be clearly seen just outside the goods lift area where his bicycle was parked. Before mounting his bike he can be clearly seen looking up and around and then in a deliberate act he pressed the fire alarm call point on the wall outside the goods lift area then mounting his bike and leaving the car park.

As you will hopefully understand we could not have foreseen this incident happening but all contingency emergency plans were in place and followed accordingly.. On clarifying and investigating the situation thereafter we endeavoured to give the all clear as soon as possible so as not to have a full evacuation and minimise the disruption to your business units.

Due to the nature of the call point being activated our engineers who were carrying out their normal day to day duties around the building were not near enough to a main panel to isolate the alarm sounders due to the call point being broken this had to be reset and a new glass installed. Hence the intermittent sounders during this time whilst the repair could take place.

I have the detail of the courier and the company he is employed by and who he was delivering too and will be following this up with the tenant and the company involved to advise them of the blatant misuse of a life safety system and the disruption caused by this malicious act and ensure this courier will not be allowed access to Aldgate House in the future.
