  • I have this setup (minus mat) for sale right now, if anyone wants a turbo.

  • Thought here might be a good place to ask.

can anyone remember that guy on WW that made his own inline seatpost out of a shit one with a heavy clamp?

He cut the end off and drilled a hole through then put that ww style clamping mechanism.

    Ring any bells?

I'm toying with a similar idea, and wondering where I might find the clamping mechanism.

    a la:

Some have even done this with integrated seatposts, as the special clamp often weighs as much as a seatpost anyway.

AFAIK you need to buy a seatpost and scavange the parts. There are hundreds on EBay.

  • How far has this project some along? Any chance of a list of the parts your set on and possibly their weights? Then we can suggest ideas for the remainder of the build.

  • Sure :-)

Would you like it al la Dammit style with photos of the items?

  • I keep changing mine and riding bits, where would I end up on this scale?

    Higher than Chainbreaker.

    Just.

  • i thought this is a weight weenie project.

Has CB actually bought any parts yet?

    Merges with 'wet dream' thread.

  • he wants to but his wallet is a bit light at the moment.

  • Currently I have in the armoury:

    Saddle: Stripped SLR - 135.2g
Brake Caliper:1 TRP SL: 139.1g (with nuts) (note:I have both front and back)
    Bars: 3T ErgoNova Team 2010 - 263.7g

I should be able to get (thank you for your patience)
    The KCNC brake - 83.2g
    New Ultimate 250L inline - 140g
    Easton EC90SLX (225mm steerer c/w bung) - 320g

I understand that the SLR can be trimmed of some of the excess molding if Im in need of a gram or 2.
I am still trying to work out if I want 1 or 2 brakes. This will obviously affect the weight in terms on the caliper/lever/cables - this is going to be fixed, but I know on long rides, near the end, my legs are going to be tired. Ill start with one for the project.

  • after long rides with a stripped slr, its more your gooch id be worried about than your legs...

  • At the moment, I am trying to see how light i can make it.

If it doesnt work with the stripped SLR, like dammit, Ill make savings elsewhere to compensate for the comfort gained in a different saddle.

  • I want to add TT bars at some point for the added hand positions, but that will also change the weight.

As a note: If I am trying to make my bike lighter than my current unofficial 6.2Kg bike, the brake caliper is identical, so I have actually not managed to skim *ANY *weight off. Which obviously is already a failing.

  • If you decide you need rid of that SLR I'll take it!

Would now be a sensible time to mention that I have a spare zero gravity brake in the parts box?

  • Frame?

  • You know, the important bit that all the other stuff hangs on/off.

  • I think Dolan Seta was the choice there- Iain?

You should actually weigh your current bike. If it is a real-world 6.2kg then is this weenie-fix worth building?

    Really? You wouldnt say!!!

Read the thread you enjoy vilifying.

    Yup, when my situation changes

    Its a project :-)
How light and safely can I build something that theoretically is said to be light.

  • I'd hardly call it vilification.

I think someone needs a tougher skin.

  • Too heavy.

So whats your suggestion then Chalfie? How would you build it? Instead of critising, perhaps advise - positive outcome rather than a negative one

  • Don't don't criticise.....

  • I don't understand the WHY. That's all. You have a bike that is approx 6.2 Kg (i.e. LIGHT). That is apparently comfortable. And that you are apparently happy riding.

To replace that with an expensive, lightweight, probably not very practical bike, that wouldn't see much outdoor time. It seems excessive. I think there was talk at the beginning about this. So, I'm just repeating that really.

tl;dr: You could waste money elsewhere on a different kind of bike.

  • Its a project :-)

Light is a relative term. Theoretically Light, well I've no idea what that is. But anyway best of luck.

Maybe just switch your current frame for a Seta and go for a ride?

  • Tomato / tomato, potato / you're a dick.

    Dick / dique

  • Chalfie gtfo

  • We all set ourselves targets, just because other people consider them silly would be a poor reason to abandon them.
