  • ^^^^Yes. Never seen any that worn before.

  • how many days/months/years do cleats last? I know crank bros cleats have a reputation to have less life than the rest .. I have been using them for 8 months, almost every day.

  • If you have to ask, throw them away.

    And removed the shim.

Unclipping while absolutely giving it the beans up a hill = cracked Catlike, bruising and swelling so bad it looks like I have a third bum cheek, road rash that burns through my backpack and into my skin and a rear wheel that resembles a Pringle.

Depends how much you walk in them.

  • Depends how much you walk in them.

    true. Not at all (almost)

  • And the addition of the shim wear it out quicker.

    removed it, it's not necessary.

  • the guy from evans (where I bought the shoes) said keep it as the cleats might eat into the sole rubber

  • The shim worked exactly as the name implied - to reduced the interference between the thread on your shoes and the pedals.

    edit; Crank Bros' guideline;

Do not use the Shim unless you have tread interference or your shoe will be less stable on the pedal. Most shoes will not cause tread interference with Eggbeaters.

  • which evans do u work at?

  • Clearly not the one you asked in.

    Wimbledon.

  • ^ Scoblewnd.

  • Depends how much you walk in them.

In my experience you can wear through a pair of look cleats on a fairly short walk on Tarmac should you for example kill a wheel several miles from a train station.

My girlfriend has had the same pair of spd cleats since we started going out 4 years ago.

    Both tru fax.

  • spd last forever.

stick out like a sore thumb mind.

  • ^^^^Yes. Never seen any that worn before.

The ATAC cleats on which I got a 5th in the Catford HC and 4th in the Bec the week before this photo was taken (they are brutal ~2min hillclimbs in case anyone doesn't know). #anyexcusetopostitagain

  • ^^Amen to that - 5000miles on my first spds and still fine. Make an awesome sound destroying little stones under-foot too ;-)

  • SPD cleats are awesome. Shame about the pedals.

  • I have been using the same pair of Look Keo's for over six months and they show little sign of wear. Track standing is a good way to prevent wear.

An alternative is lengthy surgical procedures on your bottom which I would not recommend.

  • You fucking hipster.

  • I reckon I pretty much destroyed my left Keo cleat in just 30 minutes of leading a group of 12 riders from the outskirts of Paris to the Arc de Triomphe in the afternoon rush hour.
    #freakinghokeycokey!

  • You fucking hipster.

    I've been sussed.

  • well I guess when the cleats that I already have (new ones on the shoes and another pair I m collecting from sparky) worn out I'll shift to decent-ish SPDs

  • like these: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-xt-pd-m780-xc-race-pedals/
I will have to deal with 2 things when i switch from crank bros to SPDs

    1. They are fugly
    2. 2 way entry opposed to 4 way
  • Not sure what you mean by the entry, the Eggbeater can be clipped in either forward or backward.

SPD have one way to clip in (abiet two move to clip in - push cleat in, then twist to click in).

Don't forget to removed the shim, of which will indefintely prolonged your cleat lifespan, the Shimano, Specialized, Bontrager and Sidi's AFAIK does not required such shim.

  • Ed, you know how road pedals are single sided? And mountain bike ones are mostly double...

I can't see haveing 4 sides actually being an advantage, I've never found myself trying to clip into the sides of the spd pedal!
