Take that 58-year-old off his bike for 2 weeks, and he'll atrophy catastrophically. The only reason he's going well, is that he hasn't missed a week of riding since the late 80s. Any break, and he'll need 2000 basemiles to regain some semblance of form.
Really? Sounds a bit extreme, but I'm no expert.
Maybe his advise will be to establish good habits then. Don't leave it!

Our favourite bike ride on the weekends would be in the Chilterns - getting on the train from London Marylebone, you can get of at Wendover, and then the hills get big - for the sake of a 45min train journey, it's fab riding!
There's great forestry commission trails:

Excited!

Decent morning in the saddle with Benj, HMS and 6pt. 60 miles of Essexyness. The sort of rain that can't be arsed but makes the roads greasy. One prostrate squirrel doing a good impression of a dead thing, one big crow with its lunch in its mouth, a slab of marzipan, a half a tracker, a nana, a pack of Rowntree Randoms and a coca cola / water mix in my bidon. I was up and down like a yo yo. I'm no rider and today I was even more sub average. This is always highlighted by the abilities of my ride buddies, but today was a different league thanks to the effortless lesson dispatched by 6pt. He big ringed it everywhere while I grannied every hill and was good enough to push me up one of them. Nose breathed all the way round and is presumably still out there having decided to throw another nippy 60 onto our ride as he hadn't had a work out. WAC ! Lovely to meet you mate, apologies if it was sedate, but if you fancy having the time to take in the scenery again then we must roll together soon. Benj and HMS - a pleasure as always.

Decent morning in the saddle with Benj, HMS and 6pt...
Company was pleasant, as were the lanes. Would do again. Think I clocked up 114, all in.

My tour with boy.... Those tow paths aren't exactly nippy .... offroad style riding for much of it - knackered. High point: being with my son, chatting, and riding in quiet places rolling quietly along, water fowl and lots of other birds and calm country. Low point: jockey wheel cage thing falling right off when trying to change a tube. :( Kind passersby (cyclists, natch) stopping to help were dead cool though.

My dawn laps of Regents Park last Saturday were capped by the police shutting down SE corner of the park due to "an incident" which I found out about an hour ago was a girl being raped in the park.

The kicker being I saw that fucker leaving the park and can place it very specifically due to having a Garmin and precise times. Have spoken to police and am going to give a statement tomorrow.
Gave a statement to police this morning and as I was able to give them an 8 minute window and a direction of where the guy seemed to be leaving the park they will be able to CCTV trawl with at least something to start from.

Just a short ride over to Swanage but in memory of
BIG ROB J.
About 70 people out for it, really busy in the town, delicious fish and chips.
Rest In Peace big man, never forgotten. -

I remember you telling me about this trip when you came and got those Nitto bars. It sounds kind of excellent from the outside, even though I'm sure it isn't without difficulty in reality.
Anyway, I hope you and your son enjoy it. Some of my favourite ever bike rides have been with my boy.
