I've never seen anyone have their front wheel wash out from using their back brake too much, or go over the handlebars for that matter. I have, however, seen lots of people control skids when their rear wheel has locked.
If you're desperate for the race, I'm sure I can find a course where only having a front brake will mean that you're going to crash. I'd challenge you to find a course where the same can be said of only having a rear brake.
