The surface finish on those campag cranks is doing my head in. It doesn't look like any of the pictures of unidirectional carbon i can find on google, more like the kind of multi-crystalline effect you get with galvanising, as if they've moved on from fibres to sheets built up from 2d flakes of carbon.
But what exactly are the flakes? I don't think they can be graphene as nobody's worked out how to make that much of it yet? Are the flakes formed from parallel fibres, so the material is a bit like carbon chipboard? Or is it just some cosmetic effect that doesn't tell us anything about the underlying material?
