You'll be fine. There is a huge mix of abilities there so there will always be a group of people for you to roll with. I did it last year fixed having only been riding a fixed bike for a month.
Knee warmers are your friend.
Just what I wanted to hear.

+1 to this, I am totally unfit but still found a couple of equally unfit riders to roll through the night with.

Greetings folks,
Plus 1 etc to all that has been said on whether you can be unfit and complete the ride....
All you need to do is get some miles in, start looking at the route, make sure your bike is fine and you have everything you need, don't set off too quick and then just keep on going until you can see the sea.
'The race is not for the swift, but for who can endure...' as it says in Ecclesiastes.
9:11. I kept telling myself this as I rode it last year with lots of Dulwich ' i'm on a sportive tip' Paragon type riders whizzing past me.
The other Biblical quote I kept on thinking of is 'For by Thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall' Psalm 18:29.
It is such a beautiful part of the world, so just keep on peddling and enjoy the ride.
Here endeth the lesson.
Peace and Love to one and all,
Tim -

I'll happily go out on the weekend and ride 60 miles. I just can't help but think I'll be very unprepared.
Is this the same man who rode the Dunwich Dynamo last year? if so, are you sure you're the same person?

Excellent stuff, I'm not sure if I'll be at the g/f place for the night, so that mean we'll depart from Oval instead of Tooting.
Needless to said, we'll still be riding with you en route.

Been doing forty miles a day in prep for this, need to get more in though as this is done in two journeys as my commute. Want to do at least a 100 miler before hand. Not used to these distances at all.

I wouldn't recommend doing 120 miles on your hands, not in the dark anyway ;) -

Best call him Jake and not Jack on the night then Ed, otherwise you've no hope of sticking together! -
• #371
Don't worry, I plan to call him Jack.

Ed, you've been calling me Jack since the first time I posted on this forum. It was mildly amusing the first and second time. But now its a bit more chevron like.
Would be appreciated it you referred to me by my actual name. Thanks.

Also, some useful advice from the horse's mouth:
http://owntheroad.cc/2012/05/hit-the-beach/
http://owntheroad.cc/2012/05/twenty-years-are-gone/As ever, don't worry too much about the distance; anyone of moderate fitness can ride 120 miles. You might take a little longer, but the distance is actually the least problem. An untimely mechanical would be far more disastrous, so make sure your bike is in good condition first. Also just observe some very simple rules of long-distance riding: Eat in small morsels and frequently; drink in small sips and frequently; go at your own pace and don't necessarily worry that much about staying with faster (or slower) friends--they'll all find someone to ride with. About 1,500 people do the ride now, so it'll be busy on the roads.
Drag out the ride for as long as you possibly can--people who rush are doing something wrong.
Follow the advice on the Southwark FAQ page, too:
